Diboll City Council approves the net bid of $34,568 from Lawrence Marshall Chevrolet of Hempstead to purchase two police patrol vehicles to replace two of the oldest models in the city's fleet.
A crowd of approximately 700 of Charles Wilson's friends and political supporters attend Wilson's autograph signing of "Charlie Wilson's War" book at The History Center in Diboll.
Richard M. Warner is named president of Temple-Inland Inc. Warner joined Temple Inland in 1983 and has served in various capacities including treasurer and chief accounting offi cer, vice chairman of Guaranty Federal Bank, general counsel and corporate secretary and most recently as chief administrative officer.
Newton High School Eagles rolls up 321 yards of total offense as well as picking off four Diboll passes en route to a 38-21 win over the Lumberjacks in the District 20-3A regular season finale.
TEN YEARS AGO
Former Lufkin High School alumnus, radio and television newsman and "Voice of the Dallas Cowboys" Murphy Martin is honored at Texas Stadium upon his retirement.
Diboll city officials seek $4.65 million to upgrade the city's wastewater treatment facility with application to the Texas Water Development Board for a low-interest loan.
Lufkin Industries Inc. acquires the French company COMELOR for $7.5 million in cash and stock. COMELOR manufactures industrial gears.
Diboll United Pentecostal Church celebrates its first "Old Fashion Sunday," complete with bonnets, hats, long dresses, aprons for the ladies and overalls for the men. The fellowship hall was decorated with old quilts and antique items were on display.
Tyler Davenport, 8-year-old of Lufkin Brookhollow Elementary School, wins $101 in the Y101.9 Radio Great Pumpkin Decorating Contest.
Daniel and Monica Duren of Diboll announce the birth of their daughter, Morgan Danielle, born Oct. 18 at Nacogdoches Medical Center. Morgan tips the scales at six pounds, 10 ounces and is 20 ½ inches long. Proud grandparents are Dave and Brenda Duren of Lufkin, Albert and Betty Smith of Diboll and Ginger Smith of Diboll.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Diboll High School crosscountry standout Miquel Mireles finishes fifth at the regional track meet in Pasadena and qualifies for the state competition. Mireles records his best time of the year with 17:46, besting his first place time of 18:34 in district.
T.L.L. Temple Foundation sets up $1. 5 million computer assistance program to aid 88 school districts in East Texas in their efforts to comply with the computer instruction requirements mandated by the state of Texas.
Democratic candidate Delbert Aldredge shakes off Republican rival David Scarborough to win the Angelina County commissioner Precinct One position. Aldredge gathered 63 per cent of the county vote to Scarborough's 37 per cent.
Lufkin's new main post office at the intersection of Loop 287 and the Old Union Road will be soon open for business. The 51,000 square-foot, $3.5 million structure is more than three times larger than the current location downtown.
Friends of the Library at T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library in Diboll hosts story telling and pumpkin carving contest. Winners in the pumpkin carving contest include Jane Shepherd, prettiest pumpkin; Lisa McClain, funniest pumpkin; Amanda Sample, scariest pumpkin; David Smith, ugliest pumpkin; and Paul Shepherd, most decorated pumpkin.
THIRTY YEARS AGO The merger of Lufkin National Bank into First City Bancorp. of Texas is approved by the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System.
The city of Diboll is notified by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department that it will receive a $234,566 park grant. Diboll Mayor C.H. Shepherd says the city will match those funds and it will be used to expand and improve facilities in Old Orchard Park.
The Diboll Lumberjacks are scratched, scraped, tattered and battered in Friday night football action as the Teague Lions produced an explosive second half scoring spree that propelled them to a 57-7 victory. Diboll's only bright spot is the touchdown they scored is the first and only home field TD this season.
Nine new tank cars join the Temple-Eastex Transportation fleet this week. Each car will carry 95 tons of liquid wood molasses manufactured at the Temple fiberboard plant to Temple customers in Amarillo.
