ONE YEAR AGO

Diboll High School football coach/athletic director Gary Martel presents sports awards at DHS 2007 Sports Banquet. Among those honored are: Ketaraus Stanton, MVP, football; Amanda Drake, MVP, girls cross country; Juan Robles, MVP, boys country; P.J. Tappin, MVP, volleyball; Valerie Salaiz and Katie Kettering, Cheerleader Heart Award; and Mandi Lovett, Dazzler Heart Award.

Newly elected officers of the Angelina County Genealogy Society are selected at their annual Christmas party. Officers for the coming year are: Charles Ham, president; Cindy McMullen, vice president; June Moffett, treasurer; and Anna Crona, secretary.

Members of the Angelina County Mounted Sheriff's Posse host a "Saddle-Up Trail Ride" to benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Advertisement/promotion for Diboll's first annual Tamale Festival appears in Diboll Free Press to be held in March at the Lottie & Arthur Temple Civic Center.

The difference maker in Diboll High School's varsity win over Tarkington 77-71 is the Jacks attempted 70 field goals while Tarkington put up only 38. Diboll hit only 45 percent while Tarkington hit 60 percent of their shots. Also in one of those flukish events that besets high school basketball, neither team scored a point in the second quarter.

FIVE YEARS AGO

Angelina Arts Alliance announces the appointment of Lynne Booker as executive director. Booker has held the position of interim executive director since August 2003 and assumes the permanent position effective immediately.

Al Meyer, president of Al Meyer Ford, Inc endows an Angelina College scholarship specifically for students in the Automotive Technology Program.

U.S. Rep. Jim Turner, D-Crockett, announces that Angelina County is awarded a $46,242 Emergency Food and Shelter grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), under the Department of Homeland Security.

The Diboll Garden Club traveled to Jordan's Greenhouse and Plants in Henderson for culture insight. Making the trip are Ginger Capps, Fran Rodriguez, Karen Eddins, Susan Schinke, Sandra Pouland, JoAnn Rainwater, Billie Robinson, Joyce Carr, Dolly Whitaker, Alexis Duke and Christy and Caitlyn DeStephino.

Hospice in the Pines along with Gipson Funeral Home sponsors seventh annual "Celebration of Life." The event honors the memories of loved ones who have passed away and provides encouragement to family and friends.

TEN YEARS AGO

Angelina College players and fans will be playing and watching basketball action in a new location this spring -- the Shands Gymnasium in the brand-new Angelina College Activity Center. The naming honors H.J. "Bubba" Shands Jr., chairman of the steering committee which founded the school in 1966 and who served on the board of directors for 24 years.

Hudson ISD announces the hiring of Orene Pinner as a paraprofessional for special education.

Memorial Health System of East Texas marks the grand opening of its new Memorial Healthcare Plaza with dedication ceremonies naming the healthcare building in honor of Dr. J.C. Clement, whose career spanned 40 years of medical practice in Angelina County.

Angelina County Precinct 2 Commissioner I.D. Henderson is honored with special resolution from fellow members of the Angelina County Commissioners Court. Commissioner Henderson retires after 20-year career as Angelina County's first black county commissioner.

Diboll ISD renews the contract of the Bellville, Texas accounting firm of Sauls & Pechacek to handle independent audit services for the coming fiscal year

Diboll ISD board of trustees accepts the resignation of Elmer Kimbrough, a longtime instructor with the district's alternative education placement program.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Howard Walker, longtime citizen and outstanding county historian, gives a talk entitled, "Old Trails, Roads, Ferries and Bridges," at the Angelina County Historical Forum.

Diboll VFW officers, Carl Halsell (post commander) and Ray Rector (junior vice president), along with other local veterans deliver baskets of food and fruits to area needy families during this holiday time.

Recent aerial surveys by the Texas Forest Service show more pine trees are being cut than are being planted in East Texas forests.

Gary Jones, Diboll Volunteer Fire Department chief the past 14 years, steps down to spend more time to his business as a building contractor. Diboll VFD names Larry Morris as chief.

An audit by the Lufkin accounting firm of Axley & Rode shows city of Diboll financially strong.

In a drive to turn idle land in Angelina County into productive forests, the Texas Reforestation Foundation distributes $7,902 to Angelina County landowners to help them plant tress.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas, announces approval by the U.S. Department of the Interior of a park grant totaling $235,066 to the City of Diboll. The grant will be matched by the city to make substantial improvements in Old Orchard Park.

Fifteen members have been named to the board of governors for the Texas Forest Festival, a once popular festival which will be re-established in the spring of 1980, announces Chamber of Commerce President Jim Stephens.

Would- be burglars enter the back of the Timberland Theater to gain access to Hendrick's Pharmacy by knocking out a man-size hole through the wall between the theater and drug store but are frightened off by the alarm system.

The Diboll High School Lumberjacks basketball team records falls to 6-10 after Hemphill stops them in a slow 48-43 contest during the Christmas holidays. Former Diboll student Ross Nethery, now playing for Hemphill High School, enjoys seeing his former classmates.

Diboll carolers load up on mule drawn wagon on Christmas Eve and ride the area singing Christmas carols, particularly at the nursing home in Diboll. Wagon load includes the children of Ernest Camp, who also served as the wagon master, Jimmy Camp, June and Clarence Shepherd and neighborhood children.
