Photo Courtesy of The History Center THIRTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK -Temple Industries and Temple- Eastex officials are briefed on minority employment and work policies by specialists from Time Inc. in New York. Seated are Priscilla Bijur, Affirmative Action Officer for Women and Fred Clarke, Affirmative Action Officer for minorities. Both are from Time's personnel department. Standing are Harold Maxwell, Temple's vice president/operations: John O. Booker, general manager of Pineland operations; Jack W. Sweeny, Diboll lumber division general manager; Vernon Burkhalter, personnel director; Stacy Cooke, plywood division general manager; and Henry Holubec, Temple-Eastex group vice president an president of Temple Industries.
ONE YEAR AGO

Angelina Arts Alliance presents the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble at the Temple Theater on the Angelina College campus. The group boasts 30 talented dancers and two live orchestras.

The Angelina Rotary Club sponsors four DIboll High School juniors to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards at the Pineywoods Baptist Encampment in Woodlake, Texas. Attending the function are DHS students Jasmine Deason, Tremecia Hadnot, Kim Lowther and Rochelle Miranda.

Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts, School of Music and Friends of Music present a dinner theater titled, "Broadway Bistro: the Great Songs of Broadway" at the Fredonia Convention Center in Nacogdoches.

Information packet of materials containing articles and evidence for the location of the townsite of Marion is available to interested parties who are concerned over the relocation of the Marion's Ferry historical marker and can be picked up at the Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin.

World renowned pitching consultant, performance analyst, sports psychologist, author and former Major League pitcher Tom House is guest speaker at the annual Meet the Jacks Baseball-Softball Dinner held at the Grand Ballroom of the University Center on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus in Nacogdoches.

FIVE YEARS AGO

Diboll ISD trustees approve one-year contract extension for Superintendent Bobby Baker, putting him under contract through 2006. Supt. Baker is also approved for 2 peer cent salary increase.

Recipients of the Bronze Member Award at the Drug Free Business Partnership Awards luncheon include: Jodie Jenkins, Regions Bank; Eric Pruitt, Crown Colony Country Club; Tonya Malnar, Fleetwood Transportation; Billy Jack Duncan, Pineywoods Academy; Al Ross, KSWP/KAFX Radio; and Gene Johnson, Community Medical Supplies.

Department of Public Safety Sgt. Roy Lee Owens of Lufkin is promoted to lieutenant and will stay with the Highway Patrol office in Lufkin.

Truth Ministries of Diboll plan low-impact indoor walking and aerobics program for the residents of the Diboll Housing Authority.

TEN YEARS AGO

Zavalla resident and businessman Lynn George announce his candidacy for Angelina County Commissioner Precinct 4 presently held by incumbent James Stanley.

Pollok Central High School varsity boys rally past the Huntington Red Devils in district basketball match in Bulldog territory winning 50-47.

Angelina County Precinct 3 Commissioner Jim Risinger "declares war" on vandals that are stealing county road signs. Risinger tells every judge in the county to throw book at 'em.

Early voting is underway as Hudson ISD voters decide yes or no to authorize $12 million in bonds for a new elementary school.

The first-ever Academic Pep Rally is held at Diboll High School Gym.

Lufkin Pistons 7-8 yearolds basketball team goes undefeated in the Huntington Youth Basketball Association Tournament. Team members include Hunter Russell, Nick White, Jonathan Fletcher, Andre'on Downs, Scott Parson, Zach Taylor, Tyrone Johnson and Coaches Robbie Fletcher and Lindsey Taylor.

WENTY YEARS AGO

South Meadows Nursing Home in Diboll continues its tradition of planting a tree on Arbor Day. Joining in the planting of a live oak are Ruby Powers, Mary Conn, Myrtle Lawrence, Bossie Delaney, Eddie Canada, Joyce Arceneaux and Administator Jo Nell Placker.

The Adorations Gospel singing group from DeRidder, Louisiana performs in concert at LaLa Hill Baptist Church on FM 844 near Huntington.

Diboll ISD Superintendent Jim Dunlap along with a county delegation meets with Texas Highway Commissioner in Austin to make case for a spur or farm road from Highway 59 to the new Diboll High School to be located on the old company tram road in north Diboll.

Benjamin Brown is named distribution manager within the Building Products Division of Temple-Eastex, Inc.

A bid of $45,219 from C.C. Langford & Sons of Lufkin is accepted by Diboll City Council for rebuilding and resurfacing of A Street from the Southern Pacific tracks to the Texas South- Eastern Railroad tracks.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

U.S. Marine Corps Private First Class William E. Luckey of Huntington is promoted to his present rank while serving with the Third Marine Division on Okinawa.

Lufkin Community Concert sponsors Broadway musical "West Side Story" performed by the Young Americans at Lufkin High School Auditorium.

Miss Kathryn Eileen McWilliams of Diboll is selected as a finalist in the 1978 Texas United Teenager Pageant held at the Hotel Adolphus in Dallas, Texas.

Newly elected officers of the Pineywoods Transportation Club include: Charles Foster (Texas South-Eastern RR), president; James Rhone (Temple Industries), vice president; Milford Ruby (Temple Industries), secretary; Buddy Hamilton (Central Freight Lines), Ray Russell (Lufkin Industries); Gay Baldree (Temple Industries); Wayne Bell (Lufkin Trailer Division) resident directors; Glenn Tate (Texas Foundries); and Doyle Chandler (MC & SA) will remain as chairman.
