School art competition at Museum of East Texas

Students from Lufkin, Hudson, and West Sabine school districts will display their artistic talents at the Museum of East Texas January 12th thru January 26th. The MET will host the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art area competition, which is in its 22nd year for this area. The competition will consist of art in a variety of mediums from students in grades K-12 with a theme consistent with the Rodeo events and heritage. The show will display approximately 600 pieces of artwork, and students will compete for ribbons, medals, and scholarships. Students finishing with a Gold Medal or Best of Show award will receive tickets to the Awards program and the HLS&R events at the Reliant Center. High school seniors will be eligible to apply for fifteen, four-year $15,000 scholarships as well as spots in summer workshops at the Western Art Academy in Kerrville. K-12 students winners are eligible for the Glassell Junior School of Art in Houston. High School students will also be eligible for the HLS&R Auction if they finish with a Special merit, Gold Medal, or Best of Show award.

The public and parents are invited to a special viewing on Tuesday, January 22nd from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the Museum of East Texas. The School Art Program currently boasts competition in more than 95 school districts and 50 private or parochial schools in Texas in a close proximity to the Houston metropolitan area. Each year approximately 300,000 students in grades K-12 participate in this program, which showcase the culture, history, and heritage of the West.

The Museum of East Texas is a non-profit organization whose primary mission is education through exhibitions of art and history. Located at 503 North Second Street, Lufkin, TX. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Closed Monday. No admission.
