SAR meets, discusses revolutionary period artifact authenticity with neal Narano The Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution met on Thursday, January 17, at the Golden Corral. Woody Gann gave the Invocation and President Fred Preston led the assemblage in the pledge to the American Flag and the SAR Flag. Members present included Fred Preston, Martin Netherland, Fred Jacobs, Ray Spivey, Jasper Lee, Harold Newsom, Neal Naranjo and Woody Gann. The guests were introduced and included Betty Preston, Honora Jacobs, Fred C. Jacobs, Sam and Mary Griffin, Bessie Spivey, Geneva Newsom and Burl Ivy. Preston reported that St Cyprian's Episcopal School and Harmony Hill Christian School decided not to participate in the 5th grade poster contest on 'Molly Pitcher'. Posters from Pineywoods Academy were judged after the meeting and awards will be presented at the March meeting. We do not have any Eagle Scout applications for the $100 scholarship chapter award. Absolute deadline for this is January 25. Harold Newsom was welcomed back in the chapter after being inactive for many years. Harold was presented a SAR Rosette. The application for Robert Prendergast has been sent to National and should be approved any day now. Other potential new members are J. Neal Naranjo II, Burl Ivy and Jack Irish all of whom were given applications at this meeting. Neal Naranjo was the speaker and he talked about "Authentic Artifacts of the Revolutionary Period". Neal displayed and told the story of a number of different sized cannon balls, some bullets, powder flasks, utensils, buttons and a fleam used for bloodletting. Some of the cannon balls were from ships under the command of Benedict Arnold, who as Neal pointed out, was considered one of the most able generals in the continental army prior to being accused of being a traitor. It was a very enlightening talk and well received. Meeting was adjourned about 8:30 PM. Visit our website for more information about the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, www.go-lufkin.com/SAR |
