Former Black Entertainment Television (BET) producer and touring comedian Marcus Wiley receives Angelina College "Outstanding Roadrunner Award" for his work as an entertainer and as a professor at Texas Southern University. Wiley is an AC alumnus. Nathan Terrell and Terrell Insurance in Diboll welcome guests and clients to their new office facility at 902 N. Temple Drive. Diboll High School Lady Jacks basketball team wins Class 3A Area Championship with 58-41 win over the Lorena Lady Leopards. The Lady Jacks will now take their 27-5 record against the Lady Mustangs of Madisonville for the regional crown. Students from Susie Erwin's Culinary Class at Lufkin High School visits Woodland Heights Medical Center, where they toured the dining room and kitchen facilities. Diboll High School Lady Jacks wins the Big Bayou Classic Softball Tournament held in Beaumont. Team members include Monica Mettlen, Tracey Marado, Krysti Esteves, Clelsea Waters, Alyssa Tamez, Natalie DeJesus, Denae Lakey, Jasmine Lewis, Hope Lakey, Zuki Moreno, Angela Williams, Ashley Wilson and Coaches Gary Martel and Pam Bass. FIVE YEARS AGO Trinity County Judge Mark Evans, who led the effort to create a financial safety net for Deep East Texas counties when timber sales were halted in the Texas National Forests, is honored with the Silver Bucket Award by the Deep East Texas Development Association. Pollok Central ISD trustees award one-year contract extensions to the following: William Norris, high school principal; Ronald Lingren, assistant high school principal; David Flowers, junior high principal; Lisa Farrell, assistant junior high principal; Dianne Croom, elementary school principal; Karen Shumaker, primary school principal; Don Allen, curriculum director; and Chad Collins, athletic director. Krista Cloonan, a native of Lufkin, is selected new executive director of Angelina Beautiful/ Clean. Temple Foundation donates $30,000 tourist grant to Deep East Texas Development Association for aggressive promotion of the 12-county region served by DETDA. Diboll High School debate teams finish 1,2 at district meet, qualifying for the state UIL debate competition. First place team members are Michael Grigsby and Jesus Gonzales and second place champs are Ryan Hathorn and Wade Alexander. TEN YEARS AGO Allen Head of Grove, Oklahoma collects $100,000 for winning 1998 Wal-Mart FLW Tour Bass Fishing Tournament at Lake Sam Rayburn. Lindsay Vanover scores 20 points and clears the boards for 30 rebounds in leading the Diboll Freshmen Ladyjacks past Rusk Lady Eagles 43-25. Susan Wilbanks of Diboll and Adreine Bryan of Corrigan are named to the East Texas Baptist University Dean's List with honors. Director of the Texas Forestry Museum Carol D. Riggs speaks to the Angelina County Genealogical Society on "East Texas Sawmills." Temple-Inland Forest Products Corporation approves $25 million modernization project as its Diboll Lumber Operations. Clifford J. Grum, chairman and chief executive officer of Temple-Inland Inc. names Kenneth M. Jastrow II president and chief operating officer of Temple- Inland Inc. TWENTY YEARS AGO Recently elected officers of the Diboll Volunteer Fire Department this year are Gary Mike Smith, secretary-treasurer; Gary Jones, chief; John Ray Baxter, sergeant at-arms; Charlie Mann, first captain; Cecil Hance, second captain; Larry Morris, assistant chief; and Ken Holt, recording secretary. Greg Chapman, former Stephen F. Austin State University golfer wins the first annual Crown Colony Boy Scouts of America Golf Tournament held at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin. Diboll Police Chief Danny Ray is elected president of the East Texas Police Chiefs Association. Angelina County Judge Dan Jones signs resolution proclaiming February as Angelina County Community College Month. Guy Anthony is sworn in as Diboll's newest police officer. THIRTY YEARS AGO Diboll's Lisa Burkhalter is selected Miss Lufkin 1978 in the annual pageant sponsored by the Lufkin Jaycees. British entertainers Emerson, Lake & Palmer performs in concert at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Officers of the Diboll Vocational-Industrial Club of America, Diboll High School chapter are Randy Cook, president; Vernon Ivey, secretary; Johnny Huizar, treasurer; Tony Holman, reporter; Joe White, parliamentarian; John Chevens, sergeant-at-arms; Brandall Porter, vice president; and Joe Powell as advisor. Temple-Eastex Incorporated applies to City of Diboll for a $5,561,000 building permit on its new office complex in Diboll. Morrow's Dairy Queen in Diboll offers weekend special: Dude & Fries, $1.34 Huntington Devilette varsity of Coach Dwan Coleman finishes current season with 16- 10 record. Team members include Debra Havard, Ella Blackburn, Sylvia Dominey, Sherry Pinner, Robin Terry, Debra Russell, Norma Barlow, Diane Alexander and Lynn Holland. The Devilettes finished second in district play. |
