Find The Birds And You Will Likely Find The Fish Waiting On You
There are secret keys that every good fisherman has and he uses them to his advantage that's what makes him good .Some of the secrets of the fisherman are not noticeable to the casual observer but some are after you learn what they are.
The barometric pressure is one of the most important and helpful mediums of a fisherman. Knowing what the barometer setting is and more important what it means to fishing will let a person know whether there will be a banner day on the trip to the lake. The once in a while angler usually thinks of a bright sunny warm day as being an ideal day for fishing. I think of a day like that as an ideal day to be outside, picnicking, swimming, hiking or sun bathing but not fishing. Days like that usually mean the barometric pressure is high.
The old pro fisherman knows that the lower the barometric pressure the more likely the fish will be in a fighting mood. The weatherman usually gives the temperature, and will add the pressure each day and it is an important item to watch. One of the best days on the water that I can remember was a few years back. I was on the water of a large pond. My wife had driven me to the pond and left me there. Back then I would wade out into both ponds and rivers to help cut off the limbs grabbing my lure. I also liked to throw back into the bank from out in the water. I found that fish will hide near the bank to pounce on frogs or anything else that moves from the bank to the water.
This one day I was above my waist in water and was just reaping small bass almost on every cast and on some occasions was taking a bass after missing one. They were hitting like mad. It started raining, thundering and lightning and then hail began, about quarter size. I crouched down in the water with only my nose sticking above water level. In a short time it let up a little and I heard my wife honking the horn.Wet and cold I made it to the car to be told by a not too happy wife that I had fished through a tornado a half mile up the road. Of course we know that that kind of weather comes from an extremely low setting of the pressure. Best fishing then. Be sure and keep the reading of the barometric pressure in mind.
One of the easiest helpmates for a good fishing day are the many species of birds found around and on the water. Proper reading of the actions of the birds can add a great deal to the success of each trip.
Most of the Birds That Are Found On the Lakes Can Key You In On the Hide Away
Of The Fish. By learning something about the bird's actions you can catch more fish each trip out. It is very seldom that a person can go to the lake without seeing oodles of birds. There are several species of birds that can lead you into a full stringer of fish if you will only read what they are telling you.
The most noticeable and easiest to read would have to be the sea gull, especially during warm weather after the shad have hatched. The gulls go into a feeding frenzy and you can see and hear them for a mile as they dive into the hapless schools of shad. They may dive for a few seconds or it may last for minutes. Even if they pull up just wait a few minutes and they will be back again.
Another way to play the gulls is to watch the patrolling birds. When you see one bird flying north or south you can always spot another flying the same way and they are usually a hundred or so yards apart. What you may not see will be a whole flock of birds sitting on stumps and logs waiting on the two patrollers to give the signal that they have found the surfacing bass once again. In seconds there will be as many as a hundred hungry gulls join into the fray.
The only thing that is not good on most of these occasions is the fact that the schooling bass are usually below 10 inches in size. We always use a deeper running bait to get under the small surfacing bass to get to larger bass that may be running under the melee to scoop up crippled shad. It works quite often.
There are other birds that will help you find fish if you use them properly. There are two large heron that are on our east Texas lakes. One is white and one is gray. They may be loners or they may be as many as a dozen closely bunched. They will be facing the wind almost always. If they are on the bank or in shallow water they are waiting for dead or crippled shad to float to them. This strongly suggests that there are bass out in the water that the birds are facing and one good idea is to troll the area they are facing. It pays off.
Another place that you find the herons is in a wooded area and they will be sitting in almost a perfect circle. The circle may be a couple hundred yards circumference. All of the birds are looking inward because they know that there is a large school of bass inside their bird made circle. Using a shad lure will almost always produce good catches from this type of fishing. Birds are not in the fish game for sport they are in it for survival and they seldom lie to you
The other bird that I love to see is the eagle. There are usually two of them and they may sitting in the top of a tall pine tree. They might also be flying for a short distance. Whatever they are doing it means that fish are in the area.We also watch for kingfisher birds, woodpeckers and the big black birds that are almost taking over our lakes. You may see as many as 50 in one tree and that is an excellent spot to try for catfish. Some of the catfish that congregate under those birds may be of really good size. We usually use minnows and Charlie in those spots when we are after catfish. Watch the birds and catch fish.
