Sheila's Potpourri Beamon had repeatedly said he would not renew his health card to drive a truck after his March birthday this year. The New Year brought sick drivers and loaders. The younger drivers can double loaders but from day one he said no garbage throwing for a man as old as he is. He is number one substitute driver and never refuses when they call for him. Usually the week long driving comes in warmer months when the guys begin to take their vacations. This year he has gone out for a Monday or Monday and Tuesday and it becomes all the week. Usually Mike and Travis shift folks around and Beamon runs the city of Diboll routes on the first two days of the week. Some of the, drivers have been sick with flu like symptoms and have come back to drive finally to V ride with sick loaders and then the driver relapses. Everybody knows that is worse than the first time around. So the number one sub has been going to work quite a bit this flu',, season. Yesterday he had an appointment to get a new health card. That means he has to get a physical. We had numerous other Stops to make around that appointment and I learned there are sick folks galore everywhere. It had been some time since I had shared a doctor's waiting room with so many folks as I choose my time to get a yearly exam and luckily have not been sick very much. There were hoarse and coughing people, kids with fever high enough to make them sleep the entire time while waiting to be called to the back to see the doctor. Ironically another old couple like us were the well ones. Hopefully, his getting a health card will not cause us to get sick from those folks we were with in the doctor's waiting room. Needless to say, I was quite pleased to see Sandra Pouland's Diboll column back again when I opened last week's paper. I was happy to hear that Geraldine Pouland is able to get out to socials. You are thought about often! We stopped by to Vote at the Sub-Courthouse in town and I was able to visit with Sisters Debra Brookshire and Jonnie Johnson. They are daughters of the late Gracie (Trinkle) and J.D. Weaver. They are cousins to our Denman family and it is always a delight to visit with them. Helping hold early election were Pat Williamson and Ann Phillips. I would think that starting each voter off with the explanation of what to do would become monotonous and boring by the end of each voting day but the ladies were so patient and explained each time with a big smile. Get well wishes are sent to Jean Junge, Earline Johnson and Bob Roberts who have spent time in the hospital. Randy pulled the barbecue trailer to work on Wednesday morning and called just long enough to tell me that there were patches of ice along the highway at 4 o'- clock. That always worries a mother who really cares. He cooked ribs, brisket and sausage and about 15 minutes after he started the big cookout for the visiting folks from Pennsylvania, the snow began to come down. He said all that saved him was that it was a wee bit too warm for the flakes to stack up. But it was still very cold. With the shop people he works with there were about 50 who showed up to eat and eat and eat. He was even amazed at the amount of food that was consumed by everybody. For some odd reason folks everywhere are crazy about barbecued ribs. That is not one of those foods that I like at all. Pour a bit of barbecue sauce on meat and I can take a few bites of it but no ribs. The folks in Tennessee made up for all .that I could not eat. Evidently the folks from up North do not have to be coaxed to come down South to meetings and lunch cooked by Randy. They know prize winning ribs when they taste them. |
