Importance of Neches River presented to retired teachers

Richard Donovan told Angelina Country Retired Teachers about the importance of the Neches River at the group's meeting Feb. 20.

He spoke on the importance of the Neches River in the East Texas landscape and showed a very interesting slide show of his 27-day trip on the river. There is a mixture of historical, wildlife and rare plant photos of the river's drainage area. He also had his book, "Paddling the Wild Neches," for sale. All proceeds will go to preservation of the Neches River bottom.

Lucille Anderson read a letter from Carol Elliott, the librarian at Anderson Elementary. A non-fiction series of science books was purchased with our contribution, and she thanked us for our thoughtfulness.

The following officers were elected for the 2008-2009 club year: president, Janelle Hennington; first vice president, Sue Baker; second vice president, Kay McElroy; secretary, Becky Donahoe; and treasurer, Patricia Smathers.

Hennington thanked the refreshment committee: Lucille Anderson, Marianne Bryson, Nancy Conway and Patsy Head. Margie Tarielo won the door prize. There were 42 members present. The Angelina County Retired

Teacher's next meeting will be held on March 19 with Dr. George Thannisch speaking on Destination Imagination. The meeting will be held at Stubblefield Learning Center beginning with a social time at 2:45 p.m.
