30 years of press clippings a public service of the History Center
Betty L. Capps is honored by the city of Diboll at her retirement reception with tokens of appreciation for her 29 years of service to the city. Members of the Angelina County Historical Commission and the community are pro-gressively working toward reaching a resolution of the relocation of the Marion, Texas Centennial Marker the Corps of Engineers moved in December of 2006 from its original site in 1936. A total of 309 signatures are obtained on a petition that places the wet/dry issue on the ballot for the November general election. Courtney Franks, Diboll 4-H member wins first place in the candy division at the 58th Annual Angelina County Youth Fair. Tremecia Hadnot, Rosita Silva and Tyra Stewart of the Diboll High School Girls Power lifters compete in the first ever Region Three Power Lifting Championships. Hadnot places sixth in her weight class totaling 765 pounds; Sliva places sixth in her weight class totaling 775; and Stewart places sixth in her weight class totaling 745 pounds. FIVE YEARS AGO Abby Davis of Lufkin High School is selected winner of the 2003 Red Ribbon Week theme and logo contest. Her design and theme, "The Future Relies on You and Me- Be Drug Free." Pineland Municipal Airport is awarded $349,860 grant from the Texas Transportation Commission to be used for improvements and upgrading the facility. The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Phyics and Astronomy presents "Comets: From Ice to Fire," at the SFA Planetarium. The Temple Foundation contributes $5,000 to Court Appointed Special Advocates of Angelina County for the group's annual fund raising campaign. Angelina County Airport receives certificate of appreciation from the U.S. Forest Department in recognition of "extraordinary efforts to accommodate and support the Columbia recovery air operations." TEN YEARS AGO Mustang Tractor & Equipment Company of Lufkin donates two electronically fuel controlled diesel engines to the Technical Vocational Division at Angelina College. Temple Foundation donates $50,000 to Angelina County Red Cross for disaster relief for victims of last month's devastating storms which raged through East Texas. Former St. Patrick's pastor Father Fred Julien returns to Lufkin from his retirement residence in the Philippines to help St. Patrick's Catholic Church celebrates its 70th anniversary. Hard Knocks Boxing Club of Diboll captures Outstanding Team Trophy at Savannah's Gym competition in Houston. Team members include Eric Gallitin, Robert Estrada, Luis Mireles, Edward Tovar, Coach Ruben Esteves and trainer Jose Mireles. Over 200 senior golfers participate in inaugural Seniors Open Tournament held at Neches Pine Golf Course in Diboll. Burke Masonic Lodge #833 presents Brother J.L. Porter his 50-year service award. TWENTY YEARS AGO Sambo Glass, Frank Mitchell and Dave Martinez, Jr. of the Diboll Lions Club makes monetary donation to the Crime Stoppers Band. A great crowd is on hand to see the Diboll High School production of Thornton Wilder's "Pullman Car Hiawatha," the first play produced at the new Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center. Diboll First United Methodist Church conducts week long revival with pastors Marvin Whittenburg, James Riley, James Wilkerson, Stanley Vodicka and Wayne Canon. Newly elected officers of the Friends for T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library include Glenda Shepherd, president; Kathy Sample, vice president; Jan Wilkerson, secretary; and Fran McClain, treasurer. Diboll High School's golf team wins its second victory this season by shooting 318 in the Diboll Invitational. Team members include Troy Maxwell, Chad Conner, Roger Shadix, Travis Bland and Robert Wells. THIRTY YEARS AGO Diboll Temple Junior High School girls track & field team take first place in the Warren Relays. Team members are Nancy Wells, Cathy Scarborough, Leticia Silguero, Laurel Hendrick, Monica Temple, Allison Lazarine, Sylvia Mitchell, Pam McCarty, Connie Allen, Dianna Bane, Pam Janson, Lisa Williams, Dessia Fowler, Natalie Johnson, Cynthia Levine, Sonya Walker, Brenda Ruby, Vicki Mullins, Nola Fasske and Enga Hall. Rob Taylor of Angelina County 4-H Club is owner of Grand Champion steer at the Angelina County Junior Livestock Show and sells for $7,880. The Reserve Champion steer belongs to Randy Murry of Diboll FFA and sells for $2,895. Huntington High School Senior Sherry Hudnall represents her school at the annual Dogwood Festival in Woodville. Former Dibollian Willie George is elected to the board of directors of the First National Bank of Henderson. |
