Newly elected officers of the Pilot Club of Diboll are: Billie Willmon, president; Hellen Schmidt, executive vice president; Billie Lamb, first vice president; Mona Smith, recording secretary; Geneva Ard, treasurer; Johnnye Devereaux, corresponding secretary; Charlotte Weeks, Francis Rodriquez & Barbara Nash, directors. Guy V. Davis, long-time Angelina College Roadrunner basketball coach announce his retirement, ending his 31-year tenure at AC. Coach Davis amassed 471 wins in that time with 16 winning seasons, two Region XIV Coach of the Year awards and a trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament. Lufkin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1836 donates $1,500 to the Broaddus Volunteer Fire Department. Temple-Inland's forest products operation in Diboll contributes $4,000 to the Lufkin Host Lions Club as a sponsor for the barrel racing competition at the Angelina Benefit Rodeo. Diboll High School band members work as carhops at Diboll's Sonic to help raise funds for upcoming band activities. The band members collected $460 in tips. FIVE YEARS AGO The City of Burke will have no need for an election this year, with all three incumbent councilmen (Wayne Hodges, Leroy Sowell and Benji McKinney) unopposed. Presidential historian Michael Beschloss will deliver the keynote address at the dedication of The History Center in Diboll scheduled for May 1. Hudson ISD approves annexation of the district's two new campusus, Peavy Primary and Bonner Elementary into the city of Hudson. Floyd Gilmore, Tommy Wells, George Blackburn, James Polk and John Lewis receive 40-year service pins from Citation Lufkin at their annual awards party held at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center. Novis Rains celebrate 79th birthday with reception held at Trinity Mission of Diboll hosted by her family and friends. Diboll High School Senior Terrance Hunt and Junior Terrance Moore bring home the gold in Division II of the state power-lifting competition held in Fort Worth. Hunt wins the 114 lb. class competition and Moore wins the 132 lb. class competition. TEN YEARS AGO Hannah Bowman, 11-year old daughter of Lynda and Danny Bowman of Diboll, wins the Timberfest Talent Contest held in Groveton. Champion International Corporation sells its newsprint mills in Lufkin and Sheldon, Texas and its three re-cycling centers to Donohue, Inc. of Montreal, Canada for $450 million. Diboll City Council interviews finalists for the position of police chief. The final applicants include Amos Lewis, Wes Suiter, Kent Havard, Charlie Harris, Jeff Taylor, Herschel Erwin, Scott Marcotte and Waylon Bullard. Operation Clean-Sweep volunteers in Diboll gives face-lift to the home of Mrs. Katherine DeBerry. Diboll State Bancshares, Inc. of Diboll announces the merger with Pineland State Bank. Georgie "Granny" Horton celebrates 72nd birthday with family and friends with reception at her Diboll home hosted by her children. Diboll Lumberjack golf team finish second in their own predistrict golf tournament held at Neches Pine Golf Course in Diboll. Center High School shoots 337 to capture first place. The Diboll High School golf team include Travis La- Cox, Brant Herchman, J.J. Wyatt, Wesley Wallace and John Sikes. TWENTY YEARS AGO Diboll City Council agrees to an offer by the T.L.L. Temple Foundation to fund trolley system for two years. Veteran fishermen Isaac Hannah and Bug Scarborough catch 80-pound catfish out of Lake Livingston. Diboll High School basketball standout, Prentice Jones, is selected to the Teas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region Second Team. Jones led Diboll in scoring with 14 points per game and nine rebounds a game. Diboll's only public housing administrator, Woodrow Wood, announces his retirement after 20 years on the job and will be returning home to Gladewater. "The Cornbread Whistle, History of a Texas Timber Company Town" wins the prestigious community history category of the T.R. Fehrenbach 1987 Publications Contest that is award through the Texas Historical Commission. THIRTY YEARS AGO Temple-Eastex foresters announce the first major aerial seeding of company forestlands in East Texas. Nearly 5,000 acres in five East Texas counties receive 40, 000,000 selected pine seed, "broadcast" by specially equipped helicopters. Ten contestants trying for the Little Miss Huntington title are Tonya Maxon, Nicole Durham, Vanessa Havard, Leslie Brockett, Torri Forrest, Tina Basey, Kimberly Taylor, Jackie Allen, Sharla Collins and Katrina Vardeman. Winners in the poster contest conducted by Friends of Temple Memorial Library to select bookmarks for Library Week are Richard Hill, second place; Rulaine Capps, third place; and Maria Rodriquez, first place. Diboll High School basketball players selected to the 17- 2A North Zone All-District Team are Neil McGilvra, Ronnie Johnson, Johnny Ray Lewis and Lee Adair. Special service awards are presented to employees of Temple Industries in Pineland and Diboll at the annual banquet. Those receiving awards for the longest years of service are Leo Coody of Diboll, 40 years of service; Bernis Graham of Pineland, 40 years of service; and Clarence Horn of Pineland, 45 years of service. |
