Former Angelina College baseball player, Dennis Cook, who retired this year after a 15-year career in major league baseball, comes back to Angelina College to participate in the retirement ceremonies of his jersey, #39. Coach Glen Kimble's Hudson Hornets baseball team take wins over Central Bulldogs 12-5 and Diboll Lumberjacks 9-4 in District 20-3A action. TEN YEARS AGO Neil Kemper, general manager of Oakwood Mobile Homes in Lufkin, officially opens up new Burke Location. Diboll ISD Primary School counselor Nita Hurley is selected Diboll Pilot Club Citizen of the Month. An endowed scholarship in the name of Judge William Wayne Justice is established by longtime Angelina County lawyer Ward Burke. Burke and Justice were both University of Texas Law School graduates. Vernon "Red" Oaks and Sam Coleman are inducted into the Diboll Youth Baseball Wall of Honor. Huntington ISD board of trustees approve $10.8 million bond proposal to go before voters of the district. The bonds would to toward construction of new high school, intermediate school and renovation of existing elementary school facilities. TWENTY YEARS AGO Horace G. "Stubby" Stubblefield, Temple-Eastex corporate vice president, retires after 37 years of service. Stubblefield played important role in seeing that numerous civic activities became realities. Homer Denby announces his candidacy for Angelina County Tax Assessor/ Collector. Diboll High School girls golf team wins second place in district and advance to regional competition to be held in Brenham. Team members include Christi Dear, Susan Sloan, Summer Bland and Maxine Willmon. Lufkin City Commissioners unanimously approve a permit making way for a private club license for a proposed new restaurant, Tejas Café, on Timberland Drive. Amie Jaree' Jones, three-year-old daughter of Ronny and Sheila Jones competes in the "Little Miss East Texas Cowgirls Pageant" and wins Personality, Talent Queen and first runner up in Beauty in the two-three- yearold age group. THIRTY YEARS AGO Diboll school trustees vote to accept the resignation of head basketball coach John McGilvra, ending the 10-year career of the winningest basketball coach ever at Diboll High School. A new Sonic drive-in is under construction on the old Holcomb property adjacent to Pouland Real Estate on North Temple Drive in Diboll. Diboll Mayor C.H. Shepherd cuts the ribbon reopening the town's famed Pine Bough Restaurant in downtown Diboll. The new owners are Shelby and Beverly Kenney. John Oaks and father Bill fly to Atlanta to take in the Masters Golf Tournament. Temple-Eastex provides 3,000 litter bags as its contribution to Diboll's spring clean up campaign. Huntington citizens elect C.L. Sheffield and Laverne Arnold to the Huntington ISD school board. |
