Doyle R. Simons is named Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Temple-Inland. The Angelina County Historical Commission convenes at The History Center in Diboll for its quarterly meeting. The featured topic is the history of the Diboll Free Press. The T.L.L Temple Memorial Library in Diboll conduct month-long "Food for Fines" project. A total of 401 food items were collected and donated to the Diboll Christian Outreach. Former Diboll Ladyjack and current Centenary softball player Allison McClain is named Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Week as well as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week for her efforts in leading the Ladies to a perfect 5-0 record this past week. Children from the Katherine Sage Temple Day Care in Diboll take part in an Easter egg hunt at Trinity Mission Healthcare and rehab. Stephanie Cook, activity director at Trinity Mission organized the event and the youngsters and the elder citizens interacted well and were enjoyed by all. FIVE YEARS AGO Winners in the T.L.L Temple Memorial Library poster contest are Kirby Havard and Sarah Smith (tied for first) in the 6-10 age catagory; Aracely Prieto wins the 11-14 age group and Daniel Guerrero, is the grand prize winner. Temple-Inland Industrial Hygenist Mike Brenliff speaks to career classes at Diboll Junior High School about safety on the jobs. Diboll city council approves ordinance to cancel city election May 4 and declare the unopposed candidates elected. Mayor James Simms, Councilmen Sam Coleman and Brian Wilson had no opposition. St. Cyprian's students reach out to sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt with "care packages" of snacks, dried fruit, sunscreen and all sorts of items for every man/woman aboard the aircraft carrier. Diboll City Council approves the appointment of Maxine Diane Willmon as police reserve officer. TEN YEARS AGO The oath of office is administered to newly appointed Diboll Police Chief Kent Havard, currently with the Angelina County Sheriff Department. Angelina County commissioners are looking into getting up a reward program similar to Crimestoppers to try to curtail vandalism and theft of county road signs. Abby Anthony, 12, of Diboll, captures the Miss National Pre-Teen Achievement Pageant in Waco. Angelina College officials vote to move ahead with the application process for a fire service academy. Wakefield Baptist Church sells cookbook with money going toward church's building fund. Diboll Hard Knocks Boxing Club captures four trophies in amateur boxing competition in Glena Park, Texas. Boxers winning bouts include Cornelius Powell, LaKennrick Oliphant and Luis Mireles. TWENTY YEARS AGO Diboll's slugging catcher Judd Capps belts seven homerun sparking a 14-4 win over the Center Roughriders. Capps has eight homers so far this season. Diboll City Council overrules decision by the Planning and Zoning Commission and gives approval for a day care center at the corner of Durham and Devereaux streets. Diboll High School Seniors Virgil Lewis and Judy Coleman are the recipients of the prestigious Wilbur F. Pate Athletic Award. James A. Welch, fork lift operator at Temple-Eastex Incorporated's Fiber Products Operation, is selected Outstanding Mobile Equipment Operator for the first quarter, 1988. Welch is 24-year employee of the company. Lt. Gen. Orren R. Whiddon, a 1955 graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, is inducted into the SFASU Alumni Association Hall of Fame. Gen. Whiddon is currently serving as commander of the Second United States Army, Fort Gillem, Georgia. THIRTY YEARS AGO Temple-Eastex provides 3,000 litter bags as its contribution to Diboll's spring cleanup campaign. Torri Forrest wins the Little Miss Huntington Pageant; Sharla Collins, first runnerup; Vanessa Havard, second runnerup; Leslie Brockett, third runnerup; and Katrina Vardeman, fourth runnerup. Sales at the Outhouse Factory Outlet in the Chestnut Village in Lufkin this week include short sleeve western shirts, $8.99; blue denim vests, $5.99, just in time for the rodeo! Angelina County Judge Claude Welch seeks second term. An agreement is executed between Temple-Eastex and Olinkraft to purchase Olinkraft's particleboard manufacturing plant in Monroe, Alabama. Angelina College has received the rights to produce the hit Broadway musical "Shenandoah." |
