Rehabilitation Hip Chairs Donated to Memorial Health System of East Texas by Volunteer Auxiliary LUFKIN - Hip surgery patients at Memorial Health System of East Texas can sit a little easier thanks to a donation from the hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary. The Volunteers donated 15 High-Hip Chairs. The High-Hip Chair has a higher seat for hip surgery patients. High seats are important during the post-operative phase of hip surgery because it helps to relieve pressure to the joints as someone goes from a sitting position to a standing position. It also makes it a shorter distance to stand from sitting. "The High-Hip Chair is just another way the Rehabilitation Department at Memorial Health System of East Texas, is striving to meet the needs of our patients," said Andra Self, Director of Rehabilitation Services. "Thanks to our Volunteers, hip surgery patients now can sit in a position where their hips are not lower than their knees. This prevents dislocation and aids in relieving pressure when standing from a sitting position." The Memorial Volunteer Auxiliary hosts book and jewelry sales throughout the year to help fund needed hospital equipment and supplies. Additionally, the volunteers sell popcorn, which supports numerous academic scholarships for local graduating high school seniors.
