Union Pacific Railroad officials notify city of Diboll that UP freight trains will increase their speed through the city from 49 mph to 55 mph. Diboll Lady Jacks lose to Huntington Devilettes 15-0 as Huntington up their season record to 25-1. The Bar Association for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas donates $10,000 to the T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library Hannah Reading Room Fund. Dallas' plans to build a reservoir on the Neches River make the East Texas waterway one of the country's "Ten Most Endangered Rivers," according to American Rivers, a national conservation group. Five candidates are vying for two at-large council positionsincumbents Jan Wilkerson and Ricky Conner, and challengers Gary Jones, Lewis Ivey and Fred Mitchell. FIVE YEARS AGO Lufkin VFW Post #1836 and Nacogdoches VFW Post #3893 honors sailor First Petty Officer Andy Woods for lifesaving efforts concerning family in burning house. Temple-Inland, Inc. announces the indefinite shutdown of its Mount Jewett, Pennsylvania particleboard plant. Angelina College Jazz Camp Festival for high school and middle school band students is held at Hudgins Hall Auditorium. Angelina County Commissioners give approval to land purchase in downtown Zavalla for additional county barn. Hudson ISD board approves hiring Joe Smith, from HISD superintendent, to fill vacant business office position. TEN YEARS AGO The Nations Bank Autumn Club newly elected officers are Linda McGaughey, travel coordinator; Grace Orsbourne, program chairman; Helen Forrest, president; Dixie Hunt, hospitality chairman; Marguerite Pate, membership; and Hubert Brasher, song leader. The passing of A.K. Johnson, longtime employee of Temple-Inland and founder of the First Assembly of God Church in Diboll (1945) is observed. Diboll ISD and Pespi-Cola reach $450,000 12-year agreement with funds to be used for the school's athletic department and separate principals at the four separate DISD campuses. The 106-year-old Beulah Congregational Methodist Church gains approval for historical marker. John Wayne Hooper, locomotive engineer with 40 years of service to the Angelina & Neches River Railroad retires. TWENTY YEARS AGO Retiring from Temple-Eastex this week are Leonard Busby (45 years), Diboll Lumber Operation; Harold Jones (23 years), Diboll Rigid Foam Operation; and George Keoppel (14 years), Diboll Lumber Operations. South Meadows Nursing Home residents participate in Senior Olympic Games held in Nacogdoches at Staephen F. Austin State University. Athletes participating include Ettie McNaughton, Lois Beaty, Eddie Lytle, Ina Waller, Guy Gray, Gertrude Murrah and her husband Elroy Murrah, Jesse Eddins ad Vera Moore. Diboll Lumberjack Chuck Murphy hurls the Jacks back into the win column with a complete game victory over the Hudson Hornets. Murphy struck out six, walked two and gave up five hits. The Jacks, ranked seventh in the state raised their season record to 13-5 and 5-2 in district play. Dr. Billie Cardwell, psychologist for the Angelina County Co-Op, speaks to the Diboll Garden Club. Receiving Ten-Year Service Pins from Temple-Eastex are Diane Smith, Judy Carrier, Cary Parr, Guadalupe Guerrero, Sandra Bradford, Larry Clark, Barry Cook, Esteban Mireles, Luis Caballero and Mario Olivares. THIRTY YEARS AGO Charles Vic Bass is ordained as a Baptist minister in the Southern Baptist Unity Association. The ordination is at Lakeview Baptist Church in Diboll. Harry Miller, a veteran of 24 collegiate coaching seasons with more than 350 victories, is named basketball coach at Stephen F. Austin State University. Newly elected Diboll City Councilmen are Darwin (Bo) Smith, Charles Schmidt, Fred Weeks and Dr. Russell (Woody) Ingram. Several dozen people are chased from their homes and city employees work 11 hours after a transport truck hauling 9,000 gallons of LP gas overturned just off Highway 59 in the south end of town. Diboll High School girls golf team places second in District 17-2A. Team members include Melanie Edwards, Connie Maddox, Diane Garrett and Carolyn Cheavens. |
