ONE YEAR AGO

A total of 355 pounds of non-perishable food items are collected during food drive campaign at the Diboll Curves location during the months of March and April. One-half of the food is donated to Diboll Christian Outreach and the other half to Corrigan Outreach.

Historic gym at Pineywood Community Academy in Lufkin receives final renovations. Many Lufkin ISD graduates have fond memories of the facility when it was the earlier High School and as Junior High West.

Diboll High School seniors Monica Mettlen, Tracey Marado, Rachel Coleman and Chelsea Waters close out Lady Jack softball careers with 51-1 rout of the Crockett Lady Bulldogs. Unfortunately, the Lady Jacks finish the year with a overall record of 15-16 and 3- 11 in district play.

Diboll Police investigate suspected vandalism at Temple- Inland Federal Credit Union in Diboll. Large glass window was broken and damage was estimated at $500.

The Burke Center in Lufkin welcomes Dr. Robert Carroll to the staff. Dr. Carroll will be providing Dementia and Alzheimer's consultation to individuals and their families.

FIVE YEARS AGO

Diboll ISD school board members review dress code and recommends changes including allowing boys to wear braids in their hair.

Dave Duren of Lufkin is selected Texas Logging Council 2003 Logger of the Year by the Texas Forestry Association.

Carol Nelson Shaw, representing Angelina Rotary Club presents $300 Rotary Club Grant to Lisa Reid of Diboll Junior High School science teacher.

Members of the Central Bulldog 1983 baseball state championship team gets together for a reunion and is honored before Central's April 22 game with Huntington. Coach Jack Lee visits with his former players.

Demetress Harrell, Executive Director of Hospice in the Pines, speaks to the Trinity Mission Family Council and discuss the service offered by the Hospice.

TEN YEARS AGO

John Wesley Roden, Centerville High School basketball standout, signs with Angelina College Roadrunners.

Correction Corporation of America (CCA), a private-sector corrections provider, acquires management contracts of U.S. Corrections Corporation (Diboll Correction Center).

Diboll High School girls track team blaze to District 20- 3A title. Qualifying for regional competition are Casey Yates, Lakeisha Lee, Luauva Henry, Tamara Harrell, Kiana Scott, Cortletha Jackson, Daphne Fowler, Michelle Miller and Antiquanna McGuire.

The Free Press win first place award in the weekly division at the North & East Texas Press Association Convention held in Wichita Falls. First place in news coverage based on stories throughout the year is won by editor Gary Willmon and associate editor Erin Bryan.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Diboll Elementary School fourth grade class of Mrs. Sandy Goines raises $309.75 for the purchase of a new set of encyclopedias. Fourth grade class members are Shelley Smith, Christy Hearne, Jason Bearden, Joshua Ledet, Olga Martinez, Brandy Blaock, LaMartha Kiel, Becky Pickering, Leticia Santana, Paul Mettlen, Lesley Svrcek, Matt Tullos, Ricky Alonis, Aaron Smith and Rayburn Horton.

Protesters from an environmental group called Earth First gather outside the U.S. Forest Service in Lufkin to stage demonstration against clear cutting and the demise of the red-cockaded.

Brother and sister Cecil and Paula Sheffield, 1986 graduates of Diboll High School have received scholarships to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville where they will compete in track and field events. The two athletes transferred from Ranger Junior College.

Texas State Treasurer Ann Richards serves as guest speaker for the dedication of Peavy Switch Farm, a regional treatment center for individuals abusing alcohol and other drugs.

Diboll High School flag girls, Melissa Baxter, Tracey Maxey and Chantea Reed compete in the flag and drum major contest in Cushing.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Temple-Eastex announces plans to build urethane insulation plant in Diboll and a new Big Tin Barn in Houston.

Diboll ISD trustees are studying three bond issue options designed to relieve overcrowding conditions present in two of the district's three school. The school expansion plans could reach $3 million.

Contestants competing for Huntington's Miss Flame contest (sponsored by Huntington Volunteer Fire Department) are Polly Oates, Lesa Sapp, Cheryl Stivers, Diana Segrest, Kathy Burns, Donna Belcher, Peggy Crawford, Debbie Denman, Malinda Mayes, Barbara Machett and Terry Basey.

Diboll Temple Junior School girls track and field team captures District 17-AA title. The team is coached by Charyl Palsha and Richard Sheridan.

The Diboll 4-H Club wins the Angelina County Woodlands Clinic and will advance to the state competition. Club members include Gina Donovan, Greg Krull, Mark and Bryan Holubec.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture proposes to prohibit the sale of candy, soft drinks, frozen desserts and chewing gum on school campuses until after the last lunch period.
