News From The Round Table At Pouland's

Carl Burchfield reported that his wife Betty was scheduled to return to a Houston hospital and after ten months she hopes they will be able to help her stand on both feet. Betty has been through a lot of pain and suffering since their car accident almost a year ago.

Every Thursday morning volunteers for Diboll Christian Outreach help meet the needs of the people in our community. The volunteers were treated to a sneak preview of their new location at the former home of Arthur and Lottie Temple. For nineteen years An Sweeny has served as the only director of DCO; Kathy Rodgers has agreed to accept that position. All the volunteers gathered and donated over 750 pounds of food items and had it displayed at the Temple home during their visit. It was a surprise for An Sweeny and given in her honor along with a box of Kleenex for all the tears. Volunteers present included: Leonard Robison, Jr., Earl Carl, Fran Rodriquez, Becky Donohoe, Bobby and Terry Hambrick, Mary Lou Havard, Billie Jean Capps, Milford Ruby, Joe Miranda, Jackie and James Snarr, Jean Young and Haywood Quarles. Also there from the Diboll Housing Authority were: Margie Harrell, Sarah Blount, Sherry Yates, Angela Bentley and Beve Quinney Plans are being made for a formal Open House in June.

Vernon Glass was in wanting more field corn. He has already planted 12 pounds on five acres but wanted more seed. Vernon grows a lot of field corn to grind into fresh cornmeal. He told me how he and his wife Lavada put up their sweet corn: After shucking and silking the corn, they blanch it on the cob and then cut it off into whole kernels or make it into cream style. They don't have to worry about cooking the cream style because it has already been blanched. Remember how hard it was to cook without scorching and then cooling it down before you could put it in the freezer. The Glass' have five daughters that pitch in and help with this canning process. I truly miss eating my mother's cream style corn. It was wonderful.

Fran McClain was in with her cute granddaughter, Savannah Bunn, picking out plants and a sprayer. Savannah loves to come see "Silver", our silver-hair nine-year-old store cat. Jeff Vanover was in early one morning. He'll wish he had stopped here first for coffee instead of driving on to Starbucks. On his way back to Diboll he had his picture taken at the red light.

Avery Klaire Alvarez was born April 14; she weighed 7 pounds and was 19-1/2" long. Her parents are Klancie and Alonzo Alvarez and her big sister, Ashton, is 5-1/2 years old. Avery's maternal grandparents are Chuck and Elender (Oaks) Sellman and her paternal grandparents are Linda and Juan Alvarez. Her great-grandmother is Ernestine Oaks, all of Diboll.

Elender Sellman traveled with Elizabeth Sutter from Trinity to Dallas to attend a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant meeting at the convention center. She said thousands attended. While in Dallas they also attended a baby shower for Elender's granddaughter's miracle baby boy; Kayla and Jeff Ivey were told they would never have a baby. Kayla's parents are Denice (Davis) and Tracey Oxley of Dallas.

Lynn Pavlic has been practicing his turkey call in the hunting club. He was too impatient and was walking back to his pickup when he tried his call again. It frighten him how quickly a gobbler responded although Lynn could not see him nor did he ever see him.

Joe Rodgers is an avid bird hunter and trains bird dogs. His wife Kathy says he's been content with this until he was invited on an east Texas turkey hunt. His first time and he was successful bringing home a gobbler with an 11-1/2" beard. He's hooked!

Mary Clark, Kasey Alexander, Cindy Parrish and Nancy Casey had lunch at Ralph & Kacoo's in recognition of Administrative Professional Day. These ladies all work for the Campbell Group and were treated by Lee Carroll and Mark Hafernick.

Tracy Parrish is an active student at Tyler Junior College where she is a member of the band and is a R.A., Resident Assistant, in her dorm. One of her activities is Rock Climbing Competition where she is learning to climb rocks as high as three and four story buildings. In learning to "free fall" from a boulder with no harness, every part of Tracy landed on the padded mat except her ankle; reports are she will be fine. Tracy is the oldest daughter of Andy and Cindy Parrish and a 2007 graduate of DHS.

Jerry and Annabelle Powell were here to visit for a few days. Annabelle prepared homemade Red Chili chicken and beef enchiladas for lunch at the RT. She and Jerry are both good, experienced cooks. Jerry made the sauce she used which involved a couple of days cooking and seasoning fresh red chili peppers that they buy in Hatch, New Mexico. They have recently returned from Albuquerque, New Mexico where they attended the Fiery Food Show. It is the largest show in the United States where over 300 vendors come to sell their hot and spicy food items. During their stay in New Mexico, Annabelle usually attends the Santa Fe Cooking School and brings new ideas and recipes back home and cooks them for friends and family.

Lois Hutson was in for chops to feed her ducks. She had a "to do list" a mile long for her kids who were coming in for weekend. Her son Don and daughter Kathy were coming from Montgomery and daughter Annette and husband, Bryan Blake were coming from Dallas and son Jimmy will be waiting on them at Lois'. Robert Hutson's birthday was April 27th and he would have been 81 years old.

Happy belated birthday to Chick Havard who celebrated her 83th birthday on April 24, 2008. Please remember Emily (Windsor) Guel in your prayers. She was life flighted to Houston with a serious heart problem. Her dad is Leonard Windsor of Diboll.

Enjoy the beautiful weather and come see us…round the table.
