ALL AROUND LUFKIN
The 21st annual Sawmill Supper will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 2 at the Texas Forestry Museum. The traditional meal of cornbread and beans combined with great entertainment is in store for you. This year the bean chefs are: Chuck Robinson, Jim Tierney, John Thannisch, and Debbie Richards of Yates Broadcasting. Clarkie Mae Brown will be back for her 21st time bringing her famous jalapeno beans. Juanita Walls, Betty Ann and Jeff Holsinger will do the homemade cornbread. The rest of the meal will consist of coleslaw, cobbler and drinks. Tickets are $8 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and under are free. Ernest and I went to the Panthers baseball game against Conroe and they won. We are anxious to see how far they go in the playoff rounds. From that park we went to the girls softball fields to watch Abby Yates who is on the Babez at Bat who are 10 and under. The coaches are Max Alvis and Todd Stafford. On the team are Abby Yates, Emily Stafford, Maci Moore, Elisabeth Alvis, Madison Hodges, Emily Thornton, April Radke, Heather Mc- Daniel, Jaylon Simpson and Krystin Childers. Their team won. I saw Jeff and Joey Southern who were coaches for the Steelers. Nan Alsbrooks' Miranda and Shelley and Scott Tatum's Tori were on the team. Jessica Southern pitched for them. The game before theirs had Glen Arnold coaching the Lil- Pack. The extended family of Kimberlin Arnold was all in the stands. They were: JonAnna and Addyson Arnold, Jo Ann Arnold, Jesse and Susanne Bradford, Marian Bradford, David Bradford, Jan and Jerry Morgan and Charlie Arnold came after his game. Glova and Gus Schultz' granddaughter Leslie Medley and Chris Cuzick were married Saturday, April 12, on her brother Chuck Medley's birthday, at the First Christian Church in Nacogdoches. Leslie is the daughter of Becki and Sam Medley of Nacogdoches and Chris's parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Cuzick of Stockdale. After a honeymoon trip to Hawaii, the couple will continue to live in Houston. Those attending from Lufkin were: Tucker and Patsy Weems, Charles and Polly Young, Charles and Frankie Read, Tim and Susie Healy, Bill and Mary Lynn Neal, Bill and Elsie Simpson. Trey Hearne, son of David and Cheryl Hearne, is pitching for a AAA baseball team in Minatitlan, Mexico. He is on loan from the St Louis Cardinals in Palm Beach, Fla. His grandmother, Jeannene Courtney, was telling me that none on the team speak English. His three years of Spanish are not doing him much good in conversation. He went down there April 1 and has pitched three times. Newt Courtney and Elizabeth Hearne are the other grandparents. Susan and Bill Spencer and Callie Letney went to the NASCAR races at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. They met Bill's sister and brother in law who live in Bedford. The Spencers have season tickets and are looking forward to the season. Lee Ann and Gary Lipscomb and Mark Spurgeon of Lufkin announce the engagement of their daughter, Rebecca Lauren Spurgeon, to Kenneth Clifton Williams of Hallsville, son of Cliff and Debbie Williams of Marshall. The bride's grandparents are Bob and Jimmie Putnam of Lufkin and the late Randall and Buna Spurgeon of Lufkin, and great- grandmother Evie Smith. The wedding is planned for 4 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at First Christian Church Lufkin. Vicki Martin has completed the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital For Children's 2006-2008 dyslexia therapist training in Dallas. She will graduate May 3 and take the Academic Language Therapist Association exam in June. She teaches in Diboll at Temple Elementary and Diboll Junior High. I attended the fourth annual Women in Red Luncheon. I have never seen so much red. I met Elsie Simpson as I was entering, and she did not have on red and neither did I. We were some of the few. Tara Watson, marketing for Woodlands Heights Medical Center, welcomed everyone. Woodland Heights is celebrating 20 years of being a heart care facility. Rick Williams, chaplain, led the group in prayer. Lance Jones, CEO of Woodland Heights, welcomed the group and commented how the group had grown to almost 600. Dr. Ravinder Bachireddy scared me with some of his statistics, and I have decided to do something about my body. Heart disease is the leading killer in women. Bachireddy has been in Lufkin for 25 years with his career devoted to heart disease. Sarah Stevens Catering did the heart healthy meal of salads. There were cute cartoons in the 10 tips for a heart health change in lifestyle. LaDonna Gatlin was the inspirational speaker and she wanted to know "What is Your Song?" in life. She needs to return and do a follow up because she was so good with her encouragement of women to take 30 minutes for themselves, to exercise, eat right and to enjoy the moment. Carolyn Hataway of Carolyn's Nursery in Wells furnished the beautiful centerpieces of geraniums and the stage full of plants. Angelina Beautiful/Clean presented Abeldt's Pharmacy with the Monthly Beautification award for April. The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary is in need of items to send to the medical group in Afghanistan. Lucy Burris and Margaret Dillahunty are the ones that need to know where to find Trader Joe's green tea, Jay's Hot Stuff potato chips. These were items that were requested.
