Raymond Douglas Read, Sr.

Raymond Douglas Read, Sr., 77, of Huntington, was born July 31, 1930, in Edgewood, Texas. He was the son of the late Floy (Haptonstall) and Nick Read. He passed away Monday, April 21, 2008, in a Nacogdoches nursing facility.

Mr. Read was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a parts salesman for the Ford Company, and was also a taxidermist. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, was involved with the VFW, and enjoyed playing bass guitar in a country/western band. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for his war injuries. Mr. Read was a member of Promise Land Baptist Church in Lufkin.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Read of Houston; son and daughter in-law, Doug Jr. and Sherri Read of Douglass; son, Ronnie Read of Huntington; stepdaughters, Linda Grice and Theresa Pegeus, both of Houston; stepsons, David Hunter, Nathan Terence and Steven W. Hunter; sisters, Lunita Block of Lufkin and Jesse Ruth Collins of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; brothers, John Henry Read and Russell Read, both of Edgewood; 5 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Read was preceded in death by his brothers, Leon Read, Howard Read and Lowell Read; and sisters, Maybelle Read and Bernice Carter.

Honorary pallbearers were Dean Wesley, Billy Wesley, Eddie Hurd, Venon Havard, Joe Cochran and Billy Redd.

Graveside services for Mr. Read will were at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008, in the Largent Cemetery, with Reverend Randy Arnold officiating.
