 | | Photo Courtesy of The History Center THIRTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK A Breakfast Program has begun at Diboll Elementary and Temple School with about 100 average eating at Temple and about 300 average each morning at Diboll Elementary. Many of the students eat free or at reduced price, but any student can eat for 25 cents. Adults pay 40 cents. The program is experimental this month of school but is mandatory is all Texas schools- by order of the Texas Legislature- this September, when it will also be offered at the high school. The morning this picture was taken, the students had milk, fruit cup and sausage and biscuit. But the most popular meal is Tuesday when the menu was juice, milk and a honey bun. |

ONE YEAR AGO
Numerous residents, community leaders and religious figures from around the Diboll community are on hand for the National Day of Prayer ceremony held outside of Diboll City Hall.
Diboll High School Dazzlers dance team holds auditions for new squad members for the upcoming school year. The young ladies selected for the 2007- 2008 team are: LeeAnn Carrell, Samantha Dove, Nancy Chavez, Callie Shivers, Tiana Garcia, Chelsi Harper, Ruby Hernandez, Heather Weeks, Chelsea Havard, Samantha Garcia, Rachel Oates, Selena Meza, Mandi Lovett and Rosalinda Olivares.
Diboll Post Master David Williams coordinates annual Letter Carriers Food Drive.
Receiving honors at the Diboll ISD 18th Annual Renaissance Academic Banquet held at the Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center include: Yesenia Herrera, Student of the Year; Heather Bergman, Teacher of the Year; Sabrina Fisher, Parent of the Year: and Linda Cordell, Champion for Children Award.

Nikki Miller, Diboll Temple Elementary School teacher is named 2003 Angelina County Teacher of the Year.
W. Temple Webber III cuts the ribbon officially opening The History Center in Diboll. Hundreds attend opening ceremony with presidential historian and author Michael Beschloss as guest speaker.
Lufkin High School drama class performs William Shakespear's "A Mid Summer Night's Dream" at Hudgins Hall at Angelina College.
Diboll Lady Jacks playoff run ends at area round with Caldwell victorious 8-1 in Lady Jacks softball squad's history making year.
TEN YEARS AGO
Temple-Inland executive Jack Sweeny joins Angelina College Board of Trustees.
Holocaust survivor Mike Gerstner of Beaumont describes his life to students Diboll Junior High students. His visit to the school coincides with the students studying World War II.
Dr. Woody Ingram Day is proclaimed in Diboll honoring the 22-year councilman who is stepping down.
Lufkin Conroe Communication celebrates its centennial birthday.
Karla Modisette, Central High School student senior, wins 1998 Ford Ranger XLT pickup in promotion by dealer Al Meyer with the "Stay in School" campaign.
Jeff Vanover goes 4 of 5 and teammates Joel Lopez and Travis Wallace each had three hits as the Diboll Lumberjacks shake off an offensive slump in whipping the Huntington Red Devils 17-9 in District 20-3A baseball action at Huntington.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Winners in the county wide essay writing contest on AIDS are Diboll High School students Shawn Lyles, Robert Wells and Elizabeth Ingram. The contest was sponsored by the Angelina County Physicians Auxiliary.
Marsha Richard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Richard wins ten speed bike by selling Free Press subscriptions.
The Astros win first place in the 9-10-year-old division of the Diboll Youth League. Team members include David Bryant, Gavin Wright, Benji Bowman, J.C. Tobias, Felix Tamez, Kris Henderson, Eric Henson, Harvey Olivares, Jose Sarmiento, Josh Shurley and Coaches Felix Tamez, Rodney Bryant and Gaylon Wright.
The Diboll Parks Board plans to make a request before the City Council to reopen the Walter Allen Pool in the west end of town. The pool was closed last year because of poor attendance.
Diboll businessman Sam Glass finally gets council seat after eight years of running for that city position.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Newly elected officers of the Diboll Lions Club are: Joe Baker, installing officer; James Walker, first vice president; Richard Martinez, second vice president; Al Miller, secretary; and Sam Glass, tail twister.
The Wesley College Choir of Florence, Mississippi performs concert at the Pine Valley Ryan Chapel Congregational Methodist Church.
Diboll Postmaster Edythe Weeks retires from the U.S. Postal System after 35 years of service with the last 11 as postmaster in Diboll.
Eight seniors play their last performance for the Diboll High School Lumberjack Band at its annual spring concert. All have been in the band seven years. Senior band members are Evelyn Carr, Renee Clark, Sally Russell, Mary Anne Carter, Rochelle Carter, Lisa Burkhalter, Jean Greer and Lauri Durham.
Angelina College holds tenth commencement exercise with 116 graduating. The service is held in the Lufkin Civic Center with Dr. Henry McCullough presenting the students.
