Lumberjacks fight to the end
By Russell Payne Sports Editor

(Above) Diboll's Nick Cortines comes up with a huge play in the gap at short stop for the Lumberjacks last Friday evening.
For the Diboll Lumberjack Baseball squad it has been an exciting season on the baseball diamond. Notching an overall record of 19-8 with their first postseason appearance in over a decade, a Bi-District title and finally an appearance in Area finals to boot, this year was undeniably a success for the men in red and white.

Over the weekend the Lumberjacks met up with the Liberty Hill Panthers at a neutral site in Corsicana, and unfortunately the good times have come to an end.

The opening game of play was not what the Jacks had hoped for and unfortunately for the Diboll squad it was just a rough night from the plate.

The Jacks were able to muster a hit every so often throughout the affair, but it just would not ever quite amount to enough to get anything going for the hometown favorites.

On the same token Cutler Ruby served five strong innings himself against the Panthers of Liberty Hill.

(Left) Aarron Rush came in swinging a big bat late in the game on Friday night helping to jump start a lineup that made a serious run at a come back .
In the end the Jacks just could not come up with the hits or base runners to keep up with the Panthers and Liberty Hill had delivered the first game by a final score of 5-0.

In the second game on Friday things went a bit differently for the Lumberjacks, however it may just have all been a bit too late.

Joey Solis began the game on the mound for the Jacks, but it was a rough outing for the venerable pitcher and soon the Jacks would turn to Kyle Prescott to get things going.

In the end the Jacks had moved to Alek Gaard, and combined all three Jacks pitchers had held the Panthers to 9 runs on the night. No one was untouchable for Diboll, and unfortunately the Jacks had only come up with a few runs themselves.

That was of course until the final inning of the night when the boys from Diboll seemed to dig up something from deep inside and give everyone in attendance a few more heroic type efforts.

Diboll Lumberjack Ketarus Stanton delivers a major punch in Friday night's finale against the Liberty Hill Panthers in the final inning of play. For Stanton and his last at bat as a Lumberjack, well it will be a memorable one, as he sent the ball sailing over the right field wall for a Grand Slam Homerun.
It got started with a very patient Gaard taking a walk to get on base for the Jacks.

Next up pinch hitting for the Jacks and his first plate appearance in the series would be Aarron Rush and he delivered a knock that advanced him and De'Antrey Loche, pinch running for Gaard. Next up Nick Cortines loaded the bases for a very dangerous Ketarus Stanton. Stanton would deliver a shot that went sailing deep over the right field fence and across the highway for a Grand Slam and the Jacks faithful were in a frenzy and the Jacks themselves had a shot to tie up things with the score now 9-8 Liberty Hill.

However it was not meant to be and the Panthers would get the final outs they needed to close out the game and the series over the Jacks.

For Diboll the end of five very successful careers comes with

this loss. Stanton, Prescott, Chance Johnson, Roberto Cedillo and Ruby will move on to new pastures. There will be 11 returning members of this squad as well next season, so bright things should be on the horizon.

For Coach Terry Johnson it was a good season overall and he had a lot of pride in the performance these young men put on.

"The young men on the team have put in many long hours and have been a pleasure to coach this year," Johnson said," Johnson continued, "they are a special group of kids."
