Diboll History Center Press Clippings ONE YEAR AGO Members of the Diboll Garden Club for the upcoming year include Bess Andrews, Sue Beaty, Clara Breazeale, Ginger Capps, Joyce Carr, Connie Courtney, Karen Eddins, Louise McKinney, Billie Oates, JoAnn Rainwater, Frances Rodriquez, Kathy Sample, Nancy Sloan, Edythe Weeks, Dolly Whitaker, Billie Willmon, Jessie Conner, Johnnye Devereaux, Mozelle Devereaux, Oneta Hendrick, Sophie Lenderman, Nan Miller, Gloria Neel and Aline Stovall. An amendment to the Diboll ISD pay schedule is approved by the Board of Trustees and will add an additional $420 per year more for teachers in the district and making the starting salary for a teacher in DISD $34,900. Diboll High School Lumberjacks demolish Liberty High School Panthers 52-19 to remain unbeaten and extend their season record to 4-0. Workers complete the installation of a new sigh at the Diboll branch of First Bank & Trust East Texas. Lufkin's First Street Arts Center host collaborative jam sessions for local songwriters. FIVE YEARS AGO Gann-Medford Real Estate team wins Southern Hushpuppy Championship. The winning recipe contained tidbits of shrimp/ crabmeat, cheese and a sprinkling of toasted pecans mixed into the dough. Trinity Mission of Diboll resident Bobbie Lowe celebrates 104th birthday surrounded by friends, family and fellow residents. Diboll T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library honors Joe Sample, Diboll civic leader and Temple executive who died last spring by renaming its "Night of a Thousand Stars" to "Joe Sample Story Hour." Jim Ligon of Diboll speaks at the Ligon Chapel CME Church homecoming service. Ligon's talk was about his remembrances of the church and the community of Nigton. Hudson ISD board of trustees approves the proposal from J.E. Kingham Construction of Nacogdoches to handle construction manager services for additional construction projects that are upcoming for the school district. Construction projects include classrooms, high school gymnasium completion and baseball field house. TEN YEARS AGO Diboll country musician Chris Wells opens for country music star Ricky Van Shelton at Jitterbugs in Nacogdoches. Angelina County 4- Hushpuppy cooking team wins 1998 championship in the Southern Hushpuppy Olympics along with a check for $1,000. Team members include Stephanie Love, Jason Whitton, Laura Paul, Miranda Whitton, Mike Whitton and Cody Parker. Commercial Bank of Texas announces Deborah Hambrick is the new branch manager in Diboll. Despite a 102- yards rushing effort from Damien Amie, the Huntington High School Red Devils football team bows to the Timpson Bears 35-8. The loss drops Huntington to 1-2 on the season. The 1998 Diboll High School Homecoming Court includes Freshman Duchess Rhonda Tamez; Sophomore Duchess Margie Enriquez; Junior Duchess Andrea Mark; Senior Princess Casey Yates; Senior Princess Mandy Dulaney; Senior Princess Sonia Gonzales; Senior Princess Diana Lara and Senior Princess Tamia Cunningham. TWENTY YEARS AGO Jennifer Hendrick is crowned Diboll Day Queen. Diboll Day sets all time record of $210,848 raised during the month-long festivities. Lufkin's new business is officially open as owner Mary Jean Maroney cuts the ribbon to open Sweetwater Farm, a bed and breakfast facility located on Highway 69 near Pollok. Joe C. Denman receives the city's first Founder Award during Diboll Day ceremonies. Temple acquires three savings & loan associations: Guaranty Federal Savings & Loan Association, Dallas (32 branch offices); First Federal Savings & Loan Association, Austin (22 branch offices); and Delta Savings Association, Alvin (seven branches). Ribbon cutting ceremony takes place in north Diboll located on U.S. 59 as Autotruck Paint & Body is offi cially open for business. Owners of the new business are Carl Aucoin and Sandra Roberts. THIRTY YEARS AGO Officials for Home Box Office, the pay television service owned by Time, Inc. are in Lufkin to inaugurate service. Participating in the ceremony are Wayne Neal (Lufkin Cablecom); Wayne Forsling (Cablecom); Jerry Levin (HBO); Arthur Temple (chairman of Temple- Eastex, Inc. and vice chairman of Time, Inc.); Dick Munro (Time, Inc.); and Ben Campbell (CATV). Former Diboll High School football great Emmett King takes over as rushing leader at the University of Houston in the current season. King has rushed 48 times for 318 yards and is averaging 6.6 yard per carry. The Pineland West Sabine High School Tigers plays the spoiler as they upended the Diboll High School Lumberjacks 12-0 to put a damper on Diboll's homecoming festivities. Woodrow Wood, former director of the Diboll Housing Authority for ten years, is the recipient of the Friend of Diboll Award. The presentation is made at the Diboll Day ceremonies Suzanne Burkhalter is proclaimed the new Diboll Day Queen, taking the reins from her sister Lisa, the 1976 queen. Suzanne's division raised over $35,000 of the $105,639 raised in the queen's race. |
