Texas postpones HS sports until May 11
      AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas officials postponed all public high school athletic and academic competitions on Wednesday until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak. The move suspends the baseball and softball seasons and eliminates the regional track championships that were to start Friday, said Charles Breithaupt, executive director of the University Interscholastic League.

     Two more members of the 09' Lady Jacks basketball team will play in college next season. Kayla Elizalde, seated left, has been accepted at UT-Tyler and will be a member of their women's basketball program. Vanessa Jones, seated right, will contnue her playing career at Jacksonville College. Both ladies were recent participants in the Nacogdoches County vs. Angelina County all-star game. Jones was a three-year starter for the Lady Jacks, earning all-district honors in each of those years. She was also named the district Defensive Player of the Year twice, all-region once, and all-state once. Elizalde was a two-year starter and was named an all-district and all-region player in both seasons. She also earned all-state honors once and will play on the TGCA all-star team this summer.      Last week, Diboll Primary students participated in the 30th anniversary of Jump Rope for Heart during Coach Baldree's PE classes. These highly energetic youngsters raised close to $1,500 for the American Heart Associations fight against cardiovascular disease and stroke. Jump Rope for Heart is a fun event that helps children understand the importance of community service and physical activity while helping to save lives. These events help students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health. The AHA is dedicated to helping people live longer, healthier lives.

Talking Sports
      Going National Nikki Green will travel to Colorado Springs, CO on May 13 to try out for the 19-under USA national team. As of now, the TABC all-star game she was scheduled to play in in Austin has been cancelled due to the Swine Flu fears.

     On April 26, the Breakers travelled to Baseball USA, Houston, TX, to compete in the Nation's Tune- Up Classic Baseball Tournament. There were 11 teams entered to compete in a single-game elimination bracket. Breakers defeated Houston Devil Rays (5-1), Katy Dragons (7-6), and Tomball's Banditos Black (11-8) to win the Championship trophy. Congratulations Breakers! Healthy Habitat Grants Available for Texas Schools
      AUSTIN, Texas — The call is going out to public and private/nonprofit middle and high schools across the state: Texas Healthy Habitats Grants of up to $15,000 are now available from the Texas Center for Service-Learning, with applications due June 19.

NCAA approves sand volleyball as college sport
      Budding beach volleyball stars will soon be able to play the sport in college. The NCAA approved "sand" volleyball as an emerging sport for women on Monday and cleared the way for varsity competition in the 2010-11 academic year.

Lady Roadrunner hoopsters receive post-season honors
      Angelina College head women's basketball coach Byron Coleman and his Lady Roadrunners posted an impressive 23-8 record in 2008-2009, complete with an appearance in the Region XIV Tournament in Tyler. Their efforts did not go unnoticed, with four Lady Roadrunners earning post-season honors.

     She may have to wait a little longer than anticipated, but Kayla Martel and the rest of her track and field teammates that qualified for the regional meet in Humble may get to compete after all. As fears of the swine flu subside, the meet has been tentatively rescheduled for May 15-16.

hosting tryout camps in June
      Angelina College's Roadrunner baseball team will hold a pair of tryout camps on Wednesday, June 3rd and Wednesday, June 24th at Roadrunner Field on the AC campus. Each camp begins at 9 a.m. These camps are for evaluation purposes only. Participants will be graded on fielding, run speed (60-yd. sprint), hitting, and arm strength; pitchers will throw a brief pen session.

Getting defensive
     Now in the third week of spring practices, the Lumberjack football team switched their focus to the defensive side of the ball. Coach Bolden is seen here reviewing the finer points of the Cover 2 scheme while defensive lineman work on their technique under the direction of Coach Prescott. The next game action Lumberjack Stadium will host is the upcoming Spring Fling Powder Puff game. Seven on seven tournaments commense shortly after school lets out for summer.
