The results are in
      The makeup of Diboll City Council remains unchanged after Saturday's election, but the school board is getting a new member. Mayor Bill Brown decisively defeated challenger Gary Mike Smith 251-173 while council incumbents Larry Cook and Ricky Conner prevailed over challenger Lewis Ivey. Cook received 278 votes, Conner 204 and Ivey 125.

Boy dies, shot in mistaken trespass
      HOUSTON (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy who was allegedly shot in the head by a couple who thought he and three other people were trespassing on their property died Saturday, authorities said. Donald Coffey Jr. died Saturday morning at a Houston hospital, less than two days after the boy was struck in the head by shotgun pellets, Liberty County Sheriff's Cpl. Hugh Bishop said.

      PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- CBS Sports golf analyst David Feherty apologized Sunday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for a morbid joke that went bad in a Dallas magazine.

Bass pleads guilty
      The co-defendant of Diboll City Councilman Gary Jones has pleaded guilty to a charge against him and agreed to testify against Jones, District Attorney Clyde Herrington said last week. Lane Bass, a former street superintendent for the city of Diboll, was charged last fall along with Jones with four counts of misuse of official information.

      Veda Bearden is a cancer survivor. When she was diagnosed, she sat down and wrote the following poem. We are printing it again for anyone who missed it last year.       Thankfully we had no damage from the fast moving stormy weather that moved through on Sunday morning. Our electric power was off several hours just when folks needed to be getting breakfast and ready for church. Since Beamon and I eat very early, we were out of the kitchen and I had just gotten Mother's food on the table.

      Came across a news item last week that was one of those reads that leave one shaking one's head in disbelief. A young man in Pennsylvania is crying discrimination because the small, "conservative Christian" college he attends has suspended him for a year because of the part-time job he took to raise money for school.

      Saturday's city election results will allow Diboll to move forward as a home rule city and perhaps take some steps to protect the city's viability in the years to come. Being a home rule city gives the city the power to annex property without the consent of the property owner.

Local airman Stone completes basic training
      Air Force Airman James H. Stone graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Diboll grad recieves scholarships
      NACOGDOCHES — Meagan Hensley of Diboll was the recipient of three scholarships awarded by the Stephen F. Austin State University department of mathematics and statistics. Hensley was awarded the W.D. Clark Mathematics Scholarship, the Carl Monk Jr. and Dr. Corrine Monk Jones Scholarship, and the Jason Balusek Scholarship.
