SAR chapter offers scholarship
The Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in Lufkin sponsors a scholarship program for Eagle Scouts. The only qualifications are that the Eagle be active and will not become 19 years old before Jan. 1, 2010. Any Eagle meeting these qualifications and living in Angelina County or an adjacent county is invited to apply. Send an e-mail to fpreston@ consolidated.net The program asks for an application form outlining the Eagle's accomplishments, a 500-word essay on some subject related to Revolutionary times, approximately 1773 to 1783, and a four-generation ancestor chart. Forms can be found and printed out at www.sar.org/youth/eagle.html Suggestions for the 500-word essay are on the back of the four-generation chart. The application counts for 70 possible points, the essay for 20 and the four-generation chart for 10 points. The deadline for entry to the local chapter is Dec. 15. The chapter must submit to state by Jan. 10, 2010. Chapter awards are $300 for first place and $150 for second place. The winner would be forwarded to state where the award is $1,500 and a trophy (first place only). The winner of state would go to national where the award is $8,000 for first, $4,000 for second and $2,000 for third. Each chapter can submit one Eagle to the state competition. Odds of winning the chapter competition are extremely good. There are approximately 50 chapters in Texas and not all will have an Eagle Scout scholarship contest so the odds are reasonably good to win state. Chapter officials presume there would be 50 eagles competing for the national award and this would be more difficult.
