Voluntary water conservation starts after city well problems
      Diboll City Manager Dennis McDuffie says city water customers are being asked to voluntarily conserve water now that one of the city's water wells has gone down for repair.

      Jack Duran visited with Beamon one morning while his better hail Melba ate lunch at Mar Teres Tea Room. Enjoying the great food also were Melanie Stubblefield, Monica and Lyndsey Little and Debra and Haley Palmer. Met Marie Belk in the store one morning and we talked forever.

      Royce Grimes, his wife Kathy and their grandson, 14-year-old Kevin Grimes, spent some time in this area visiting with family and friends. They flew from Virginia Beach into New Orleans for Kevin to visit the campus of LSU where he plans to attend; he faithfully wore the LSU colors. They enjoyed visiting with Barbara Spradley, Cullen Vaughn and Faye Lout.

      Retired chief of the Lufkin State School, Billy Beaver, celebrated his 90th birthday July 28 with celebrations that lasted all week. Billy started his birthday with an 18 hole round of golf with his buddies at Lufkin Country Club, that night he and his lovely wife Mildred were guests of J. R. and Janette Cox for dinner and dancing at The Beach.

      JUNE PERMITS TO DRILL The Commission issued a total of 842 original drilling permits in June 2009 compared to 2,444 in June 2008. The June total included 685 permits to drill new oil and gas wells, 23 to re-enter existing well bores, and 134 for re-completions.

State housing agency providing lift to Ike recovery efforts
      (AUSTIN) - Aiming to rapidly rebuild the housing stock of East Texas in the wake of Hurricane Ike and bolster the region's economy, the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (THDCA) today announced an award of federal disaster recovery funds to a regional planning commission serving a 12-county area of East Texas.

      It's hard to believe, but high school football is about to start back up in Texas. It's my favorite time of the year, too! The Lumberjacks began their quest for the elusive 3A state title Monday with two-a-day practices as did over 500 other teams in the state ranging from six-man teams in West Texas to big 5A schools in East Texas.
