Fabulous Finds and Foods set for Tuesday, Oct. 20
The Pilot Club of Lufkin is having its second annual Fabulous Finds and Foods, a dinner and auction, on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at The Lodge in downtown Lufkin. This event will benefit Project Lifesaver, scholarships for nursing students, BrainMinders and the other projects of the club. The Pilot Club of Lufkin Inc. is a service organization with a focus on brain injury and brainrelated disorders. This year the event will include both a silent and live auction with Mack Carnes as the auctioneer. Betty’s Catering will cater dinner. Tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased from any Pilot Club member. Proceeds from last year’s event have enabled them to bring Project Livesaver to Angelina County. These are bracelets for persons with Alzheimer’s disease, autism, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury or other brain related disorders. Four people in Angelina County are wearing the bracelets. To learn more about the Fabulous Finds and Food tickets, contact Susie Healy at 936-634- 3795 or email at srhealy2003@yahoo. com or JoAnn Arnold at 936-676-2137.

Deborah Winston was playing “tennis” with her dogs, Charlie and Kobi, on Reen Street. They love chasing those balls, get plenty of exercise and their time together offers excellent teaching moments. Just recently in July, she began working with Rick and Susan Roig. They got her involved with Golden Beginnings Golden Retriever Rescue in Houston. These rescue groups have a group of foster families who take in goldens which have been given up by families due to recession, strays found on the streets and/or in shelters. The dogs live with the foster families, learn house manners and stay with them until they are healthy and ready for adoption. Deborah said, “Well my friend, I’m a foster failure. I took in “Charlie” in early July. My plan was to see him through heartworm treatments, put some weight on him then put him on the rescue group’s Web site and adopt him out. About two weeks in, I fell in love and I have formally adopted him myself. I’m now ready to take in another foster, but I must be objective this time. I simply cannot adopt each dog that comes my way! As you know I LOVE dogs.” If you would like to view the goldens that are available for adoption go to: www. gbgrr.org.
