Kurth Lake bird walk set for Saturday
      In conjunction with the John James Audobon: Am”erican Artist and Naturalist” exhibition at the Museum of East Texas, Louis Debetaz and Carroll Moore will be leading a series of adult-only bird walks at Kurth Lake in Lufkin.

Cooler weather was nice, productive while it lasted
      How wonderful the cooler weather was for a few days and when it left it zoomed off. The humidity was to swim in if you could breathe. I managed to get some chores done that had gotten sidelined due to the heat and humidity, but now the list will remain unfinished until cooler air returns.

Maxeys and Donahoes take trip
      50 DAYS! That’s how long Clyde and Linda Maxey were gone on their last RV adventure. They left Diboll with traveling buddies, Charles and Becky Donahoe; their deadhead destination was Glacier National Park in Montana. From there it was on to South Dakota where they visited Custer, the “faces,” Crazy Horse, Badlands and the fascinating large drug store in Wall, S.D.

Fabulous Finds and Foods set for Tuesday, Oct. 20
      The Pilot Club of Lufkin is having its second annual Fabulous Finds and Foods, a dinner and auction, on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at The Lodge in downtown Lufkin. This event will benefit Project Lifesaver, scholarships for nursing students, BrainMinders and the other projects of the club. The Pilot Club of Lufkin Inc. is a service organization with a focus on brain injury and brainrelated disorders.

Public education: The ladder up, out
      You don’t have to sell Jackie on the importance of education. He is living proof. The youngest of four children, Jackie was raised by his mother in a small Texas town. She worked hard, but times were tough. Sometimes, bills weren’t paid on time and lights and phone service were cut off. When he was 16, Jackie took a job washing dishes in a nursing home to help out.

The fight for right to bear arms wages on
      Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling that affirmed the Second Amendment right to bear arms as an individual, protected right. In D.C v. Heller, the court declared that the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns was an unconstitutional restriction on that right.

      A couple of weeks ago, a record of What if … I know of an animal that is being treated cruelly? If a peace officer or an officer who has responsibility for animal control in the county has reason to believe that an animal has been or is being cruelly treated, the officer may apply to a justice court or magistrate for a warrant to seize the animal.

Rewarding trip: DJH students tour Trout Zoo
      Diboll Junior High students enjoyed a trip to the Ellen Trout Zoo for their accelerated reading and math reward trip. Students watched a presentation on animal ecosystems and food chains that was presented by Charlotte Henley, zoo director. They got to view a hedgehog and ball python up close. They also toured the zoo and got to look at all of the exhibits.
