Temple Memorial Library will sponsor an art auction and among the featured artists will be Jim Ligon and Mrs. Virginia Nelson. The two local artists are pictured with some of the many pieces of art which will be auctioned off to the public as part of the library’s fund raising drive to help finance new construction. Twenty-seven local and area artists have contributed works for this auction to benefit the library. Some contributing artists include Buckshot Ferguson, Minnie Evelyn Donahoe, Ellen Temple, Pete Smart, Joyce Bradshaw and Rita Shepherd. Diboll’s Jessica Tipton, hair stylist, formerly of Bravo, is now located within Miss McGillicuddy’s in north Diboll.

Nita Hurley,counselor at Diboll Junior High School, is honored with the DISD Employee of the Week recognition.

Diboll Lady Jack basketball player Nikki Greene makes it official with her recent signing of her letter of intent to play her collegiate basketball at Penn State University.

Fairview resident Jerry Gaines is honored at the Stewart Blood Center in Lufkin for giving18 gallons (144 pints) of blood since 1987.

Diboll’s student enrollment shows steady growth as there are 1,831 officially enrolled in the DISD.

Diboll High School’s FFA chapter wins second place in public relations at the Leadership Development Event held at Stephen F. Austin State University. Team members include Lindsey Chandler, Caurie Cheshire, Carlos Paloma and Faustino Salais.

FIVE YEARS AGO

Diboll High School Ladyjack third baseman Allison McClain signs letter of intent to play college baseball with Centenary College of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Former DHS Ladyjack basketball player Alisha Fowler earns All- Southland Conference second team honors while playing college basketball at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

Ashley Rogers, Centerville High School Lady Bulldog, places 11th (12:25) at the state cross country meet held in Round Rock. This is the first time CHS have ever had a representative at a state cross county meet.

Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs defeat the Lufkin Texans for the East Texas Youth Football League Super Bowl title by a score of 14-11 at Lumberjack Stadium in Diboll. C-C had an undefeated season. Team members include Beto DeJesus, Greg Nobles, Bobby Whiteley, Eric Durham, Andy Mc- Collum, Rafael Valdez, D.J. Cratic, DeVontee Ryans, Bo Brown, Clint Platt, Ivan Alvarez, Rodolfo Nava, Zac Wheeler and Coaches Clay Platt, Roberto DeJesus, Keith Stutts and Leroy Durham.

Gina Donovan with the Neches River Protective Initiative strives to have the Neches River waterways designated as a Scenic River through the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

TEN YEARS AGO

Diboll, Hudson ISD’s considers new standardized dress.

Angelina County Commissioners approve legal speed limit on Old Diboll Highway (CR 59) from 35 to 45 m.p.h.

Hudson ISD approve funding plan for new gymnasium for school year 2000-2001.

Diboll Veterans of Foreign Wars/Ladies Auxiliary announce winners in its 1999 Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. Jessica Hall, 1st place; Melicio Carell, 2nd place; and Christine Macher, 3rd place..

Diboll’s newest ministry, The Garden of Eden opens its doors at 708 Lynn Street in west Diboll. The founder is Evangelist Glenda Butler.

Diboll High School football team places 10 on All-District 1st Team. Included are Cedric Vinson (QB), Oather Spencer (LB), Terry Colquitt (RB), Brandon Bray (WR/DB), Jeremy Freeman ((TE/LB), Lionel Garr (OL), Phillip Richard ((DL), Edgar Portillo (K), Josh Prescott (OL) and Anthony Ligon (OL).

American Track & Field Magazine names DHS Brandon Bray as its top ranked high school long jumper in the nation.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A part of Diboll’s history since 1957 is coming down, Pavlic’s Super Market, is dismantled by Aubrey Luce and his wrecking crew. Local officials and the highway department agree to study the need for a farmto market road connecting Diboll and Groveton.

Diboll school board members vote to postpone until the spring a decision on whether or not to contract its bus system.

Donovan Real Estate is the grand sweepstake winner at the fourth annual Winterfare and Christmas parade in downtown Lufkin. Over 120 entries, featured floats, bands and magicians participated in this year’s event.

Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Master Sargeant Roy Benevedez speaks to the joint meeting of Lufkin High School Interact Club and Lufkin Rotary Club.

The First United Methodist Church of Diboll participates in the dedication of its entire church campus.

Diboll City Council approves all City of Diboll employees to receive a $400 bonus in December.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

After 17 years of missionary work in the Philippine Islands, Father Fred Julien, M.S. returns to Lufkin. Father Julien had spent 23 years in Lufkin as pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish.

Frances (Fran) McGilvra is named office manager of the Diboll Branch of Lufkin Federal Savings & Loan Association.

Congressman Charles Wilson calls for the deportation of Iranian radicals who are participating in violent demonstrations in this country.

Diboll Police Chief Dewey Wolfe announces the hiring of Larry Pitts of San Augustine and Thomas Carrington of Lufkin will fill out his staff to full force of seven partrolmen.

The DHS Ladyjacks volleyball team wins district and bi-district title and will advance to the regional tournament in Brenham. Team members include Angela Capps, Peggy Chandler, Robbie English, Susie Capps, Lisa Harris, Tonya Clark, Ethel Fowler, Michelle Hall, Natalie Johnson and Coach Carol Drake.

Glen Chancellor, General Manager of the Forest Division of Temple-Eastex, announce the promotion of Boyd Turner to northern region forest regeneration manager.
