Club travels to Dragonfly Nursery
      Fifteen Diboll Garden Club members and one guest took advantage of a cool, crisp autumn day to travel to The Dragonfly Nursery and Garden in Nacogdoches on Nov. 17. They were greeted by Kimberly Wright, owner of the nursery-garden, who presented a brief program about various ways to grow and show pot plants.

Ribbon cutting for Tracy’s Nails
      Members of the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce help owners of Tracy’s Nails celebrate their opening with a ribbon-cutting last week. The shop is located at 404 N. Temple Drive in Diboll. It is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 936-829-4435.

      Billie Jean Capps and Betty Hendrick returned Friday, Nov. 13, after a fun-filled week with their “Golden Agers” group from Denman Avenue Baptist Church. Betty reported seeing beautiful fall colors traveling by bus to Branson, Mo. She said, “While the pace was never slow, this group had a lot of energy and delightful fellowship.

      Mark Willis of Diboll stopped by the beauty shop to get a haircut last week and he had been hunting earlier. He entertained Melinda Harris and me with a deer story. I’ve never been deer hunting but I have a big imagination and have read about hunting exploits and excitement enough to enjoy his story.

      Elaine Cox with Lufkin Antique Mall sent me the hourly door prize winners who were: Debbie Jacks, Myra Ward, Kay Simmons, Sue Cromeens, Ronna Conlon, Margaret Gibson, Amy Schultz, Brenda Rye and Ken Hager. Important time to shop locally
     This Friday is “Black Friday,” the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. It is the day when retailers begin to go from being in the red, or posting a loss on the books, to being in the black, or turning a profit. With the economy still struggling, it’s important to shop Diboll whenever possible this Christmas.

      Thanksgiving is around the corner and college freshmen across the country are heading home, many for the first time since August. Parents can look forward to spending quality time with their sons or daughters during the weekend, but they should be prepared to discover that the parentchild relationship is a little different than it was a few months ago.

      Today I am 77 years old. When I was 16, I started working for the railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio. From that time on, every paycheck I ever got had money taken out of it for Social Security, an “old age benefit plan” mandated by the government.

DFP sponsors poster contest
      As a service to the communities it serves, the Diboll Free Press agreed to sponsor the Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest and publish the winning posters and their artists. The slogan for the week this year was “The World starts with You and Me, So Be Drug Free.” The 2010 slogan will be “Peace, Love and Me…I’m Drug Free.”
