Photo couresy of The History Center Thirty Years Ago This Week This week’s feature story spotlights Lufkin KRBA Radio program, “Breakfast at Boesch’s,” with hosts Hank Huggins and Gus Boesch. For the past 20 years, the twosome have presented old general store, cracker barrel philosophy on the 15-minute early morning broadcast direct from the coffee bar at Boesch’s Barn & Nursery. The show started on KTRE Radio back in 1959, then KTRE became KLUF and in 1976, “Breakfast at Boesch’s” moved to KRBA Radio. Huggins, originally from Tennessee, came to Lufkin in 1955 and was a popular host of his own show, Double H Ranch, which aired on KTRE television for 17 years. Diboll ISD board of trustees extend Superintendent Gary Martel’s contract through 2012.
Crown Colony Country Club is offering the second Songwriter’s Night “Austin Comes to East Texas.” Proceeds will benefit local songwriters’ group “Write Around Texas.”
Diboll city council explores alternatives to the planned Eason Lake water well field. The city is in need of additional water supplies, but difficulties in negotiating use of water from the Eason Lake area leads the council to favor seeking another solution.
Diboll ISD Employee of the Week (16) is Temple Elementary School librarian and Diboll ISD Employee of the Week (17) is Kathy Custer, fifth grade teacher at Temple Elementary School.
Diboll Lumberjacks boys golf team opens up the spring season in Jasper at the Bulldog Invitational Tournament and places 6 out of 16 teams. Diboll Junior Wesley McClain wins individual honors shooting a 1 under par 71 which was 8 strokes better than the nearest golfer.
Diboll city council looks at new voting district map by the U.S. Justice Department for the pending city charter.

Hudson ISD board of trustees extends Superintendent Mary Whiteker contract through 2008.
Angelina County officials place the old county jail facility up for lease and receive no takers.
Officials with Lufkin Industries state they will appeal a recent ruling by a federal judge that the firm’s hiring and promotion practices are discriminatory. The suit was filed on behalf of 700 black workers who worked at Lufkin Industries since 1994.
Lacy Reed and Kevin Farr are crowned Hudson High School Homecoming Queen and King.
Diboll Junior High School Renaissance Students of the Week are Jordan Wallace, sixth grade; Alex Gaard, seventh grade; and Adam Stewart, eighth grade.
Hudson Lady Hornets defeat the Diboll Lady Jacks 52-27 but no Lady Hornet reached double digit scoring. Hudson’s Sarah Burke and Jessica Bowers led the way with nine points apiece.
Memorial Health System of East Texas at Lufkin is named one of the nation’s top 229 hospitals- the top 5 per-cent for clinical quality by HealthGrades, an independent organization focused on health care quality.

Diboll ISD drops standardized dress code issue- no uniforms. Hudson ISD still considering uniform option.
Angelina County Chamber of Commerce honors the late Rufus Duncan with the Angelina Award and Angelina College President Larry Phillips receives the Golden Anvil Award at the Chamber’s annual banquet.
Diboll ISD welcomes Billie Robinson as its new director of finance.
Diboll High School football standouts offensive lineman Lionel Garr signs to play football with the University of Texas and defensive lineman Phillip Richard signs to play college ball with Stephen F. Austin State University.
Diboll Veterans of Foreign Wars Post plans dedication for the Diboll VFW Memorial Wall located just north of the T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library. The Memorial Wall was built by the Diboll VFW and Ladies Auxiliary.
Diboll Junior High Littlejacks seventh grade basketball team beats Center Junior High School Roughriders 46-29 with Jermichael Finley outscoring the entire Center team with his 36 point performance.
Twenty Years Ago
Assistant District Attorney Clyde Herrington is named by Gov. Bill Clements to finish out the unexpired term of former Angelina County DA Gerald Goodwin who resigned to run for district judge in the 159th Judicial District.
Promotions at Temple- Inland: C. Michael Harbordt is named vice president of Temple-Inland Forest Products. Harbordt will oversee all functions relating to environmental affairs; John Monk is named general manager, forest. Monk will direct all forest operations, including forestland management of the company’s 1.3 million acres of timberland and fiber supple for all wood-using plants in Texas and Louisiana; and Dr. Michael McCollum is named manager, operations planning for Temple-Inland’s forest involving inventory, budgets and fiber supply.
U.S. Census bureau opens new office in the Angelina Mall.
Ribbon cutting ceremony commences at the Buckner’s Children’s Service of East Texas located at the First Baptist Church in Lufkin. Joy Reagan is the administrator.
Panthers taking honors at the Lufkin Panther Annual Football Banquet are Cedric Walker and Vernon Wade as they share the Most Valuable Defensive Player Award and Eric Acheson, Eddie Thompson and Dwayne Castle sharing the Most Valuable Offensive Award.
Thirty Years Ago
The Gospel Torches (formerly known as the Wilkerson Family) perform in concert at Angelina College.
Temple Associates create new heating, ventilating and air conditioning department that will be headed by Forest Caudle and Robert Pettit.
Third grade students at Diboll Elementary School have been studying the geography and customs of the Hawaiian Islands and teachers Paula Murphy and Nancy Trout puts on special treat for their students by staging a luau, complete with leis, grass skirts and island cuisine.
Hudson Hornets use their familiar slow down tactics to hand the Diboll Lumberjacks their first zone loss in district play, 32-28. Coach Ronnie Pat Durham’s Hornets hit on 10 of 12 free throws for an 83 percent average, while the Lumberjacks got only two free throws and hit both.
