Hostesses for the January Diboll Garden Club meeting, from left, are Bettye Greer, Joyce Carr and Billie Robison. Carol Moore was the speaker. With resolve to be better stewards of plant life, the Diboll Garden Club met Jan. 26 at Billie Robison’s home. She, along with Bettye Greer and Joyce Carr, provided refreshments and fellowship for 19 members.

JoAnn Rainwater presided over the meeting. Oneta Hendrick read “The Gardener’s Prayer,” which was followed by the reading and approval of December minutes and the treasurer’s report.

The group was encouraged by Fran Rodriguez, Sunshine chairperson, to make telephone calls and send notes to club members who have been or are ill as well as making visits when possible.

After brief business details were taken care of, Mrs. Rainwater introduced Carol A. Moore as guest speaker. Ms. Moore, now serving her 15th year as president of the Lufkin Council of Garden Clubs, presented a delightful slide program based on Steve Bender’s study of “pass along” plants. Because of her experience and membership in several garden clubs as well as being a leader in district and state garden clubs, Ms. Moore, with her expertise, answered questions and offered help with these kinds of plants.

“Pass along” plants traditionally have been associated with gardens and yards in the South. These flowers, ferns and other types of greenery are so named because rather than being available in most garden centers, they are chosen from friends and family collections and passed along with stories and sometimes unusual characteristics.

Members enjoying enlightening presentation were as follows: Bess Andrews, Garvis Baldree, Sue Beaty, Clara Breazeale, Peggy Burt, Joyce Carr, Bettye Greer, Betty Hendrick, Oneta Hendrick, Lucille Jones, Sandra Pouland, Jo Ann Rainwater, Billie Robision, Fran Rodriguez, Kathy Sample, Gay Storch, Chubby Slack, Aline Stovall, and Dolly Whitaker.
