Edwin F. “Dick” Hendrick receives his 60-year service pin from the Burke Masonic Lodge. Fellow Mason J.C. Havard makes the presentation.

An outbreak of flu at Diboll Primary and Temple Elementary Schools this past week is hit hard as attendance plunge. Diboll Primary attendance drops to 84.6 percent and Temple Elementary drops to 91 percent.

Representing Diboll High School at the Region XXI All Region Band Clinic/ Concert are Erik Sosa, trombone; Steven Brown, trumpet; Rogelio Vasquez, trombone; and Heather Sill, flute. All Region Band members from Diboll Junior High include Jessica Skipper, trumpet and Kyle Wallace, trombone.

Diboll Girl Scout Daisy Troop 1530 new members hold ceremony at Diboll First Baptist Church as they receive their official Daisy uniforms. New members include Kayla Palomino, Sianna Giatan, Preslie Dulaney, Gracie Crager, Kayla Salazar and Samantha Tobias.

Diboll High School Lady Jacks basketball team clinches postseason birth for the third consecutive year, as well as a share of the District 18-3A Championship with a win over the Center High School Lady Riders 69-19.

Five Years Ago

Mona Melton and Cindy Milligan-Neal are promoted to the positions of vice president for First Bank & Trust East Texas.

Jermichael Finley, who rewrote most Diboll Lumberjack pass-receiving records during his career, is named to Class 3A’s allstate football selection for the second year in a row by the Texas Sports Writers Association. Finley is chosen as a first-team all-state selection at the tight end position.

Nearly 200 people stopped to view the 5,200-pound granite monument depicting the Ten Commandments as it made a stop at Heritage Baptist Church in Lufkin. The monument was originally housed in the Alabama Judicial Court Building in Montgomery, Alabama.

Temple-Inland’s recent logo change is reflected on the sigh which is in place now as it sits in front of Temple’s main office building at 303 S. Temple Drive in Diboll.

The Angelina County & Cities Health District’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program celebrate the opening of a new Diboll WIC clinic.

Ward and Anna Belle Burke are awarded the Angelina County Chamber of Commerce Angelina Award for championing the cause of the mentally retarded in Texas.

Ten Years Ago

Funding is approved by the Texas Department of Transportation in the amount of $19.2 million to get an environmental assessment study underway on the Inter-State 69 project.

Angelina College registered 4,163 students for the spring 2000 semester, marking the first time ever the college has topped the 4,000- student figure for a spring semester.

Buster Sutton and K.K. Campbell are crowned Hudson High School’s Homecoming King and Queen in ceremony held at Shands Gym on the campus of Angelina College.

Huntington High School takes second place and Diboll High School places eighth at the Region IX Academic Decathlon small-school competition held in Tyler. Huntington scores 31,583 points, Diboll scores 25,804 and Crockett takes the title with 32,482 points.

Cleveland Payne Sr. retires from Texas South- Eastern Railroad after 33 years and 6 months and was honored with retirement reception hosted by TSE’s executives Don Harrison and Gary Mike Smith.

Arthur Temple College of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin University honors Temple-Inland trio, Kenneth Nelson, Joe C. Denman and Robert E. “Judge” Minton with endowed distinguished professorships named in their honor.

Twenty Years Ago

At recent news conference in his Lufkin office, Congressman Charles Wilson states tensions in the Soviet Union bear watching closely and Russia has become an economic basket case.

Fran McClain of the Diboll Beautification Council states that the recent survey taken indicates that Diboll is nice but litter is a problem.

Gerald Goodwin is appointed by Gov. Bill Clements to serve out the tenmonth unexpired term of retiring Judge David Walker in the 159th Judicial District Court. Goodwin is unopposed on the March 13 Democratic primary ballot for that position.

Diboll High School junior Cheryl Bell wins gold medal at the Academic Decathlon held at Lufkin High School. This was the firstever Academic Decathlon competition for Diboll High School.

U.S. Marine Sergeant Archie D. Levias of Diboll reports for duty at Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Georgia.

U.S. Navy Fireman Recruit Drayton D. Solly of Pollok completes recruit training at Recruit Training Command, San Diego, California.

Thirty Years Ago

New wood-fired boiler at the Temple-Eastex fiberboard plant is now operating about 50 percent capacity. The boiler enables the plant to save approximately 33 percent on natural gas. It is fueled with wood waste which includes sawdust, chips and bark.

East Texans mourn the death of Dr. Ralph W. Steen, former president of Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. Steen was the prime mover behind the university registering significant gains in enrollment and physical size.

Angelina County high school students receiving the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award are Tonya Clark, Diboll; Monica Brunson, Lufkin; Monica Harrison, Lufkin; Kim Metts, Pollok; LaTisha Hancock, Huntington; and Leigh Brooks, Wells.

One of Diboll’s oldest fire trucks, the 1952 vehicle, is given to the Fuller Springs VFD. Diboll VFD no longer uses the truck and that it will be a big help to the growing Fuller Springs Fire Department.

Howard and Ethel Walker are recipients of the coveted Angelina Award for their lifetime contributions to the county’s education system.
