After a long day of rain yesterday, the sun is threatening to peek out of the clouds on an exciting day in the Diboll sports world.  Here's what's going down later today:

The Lady 'Jack basketball team has a chance to clinch a playoff spot with a win tonight in Hudson.  Currently, the Lady Hornets are tied with Central atop the 18-3A standings, so a win for Diboll would, at the very least, move them in to a tie for second in the district.  The Lady Bulldogs play Huntington tonight, and if they win, the Lady 'Jacks are in the playoffs regardless of what happens in their game.  A best-case scenario for the figthing Laura Knights would be a Lady 'Jack win and a Huntington win.  That would force a three-way tie for first with only one game remaining in the regular season.  The worst-case scenario is a Huntington win and a Diboll loss.  If that happens, Tuesday nights game in Diboll would be for the last playoff spot between those same two teams.  In their first meeting of the year, Hudson escaped town with a narrow victory, so the Lady 'Jacks will be looking to pay them back tonight.  Game time is set for 6:15 p.m., so make the short drive over to Hudson and help the home town team advance to the playoffs in 2010.

It might take some divine intervention for the Lumberjack basketball team to reach post-season play, but they have a chance to play spoiler tonight when they take on the district leading Hudon Hornets tonight.  Hudson took the first meeting here in Diboll, but it was a close game that the 'Jacks had a chance to win.  If they can carry the momentum they established in the 63-50 win over Carthage on Tuesday night and get out to a fast start again tonight, they have a chance to pick up a win on the road.  Christian Lovelady and Chris Bailey combined for 36 points in that game, and the Axemen's chances of pulling the upset will be a lot stronger if they get another solid performance from those two players.  Game time starts at 7:30, so come early for the girls game and stay late for the boys.

In soccer action, Coach Caldera and the Lumberjacks travel to Jasper tonight to take on the Bulldogs.  They lost 2-0 in Tatum on Tuesday, but they dominated the second half in possessions and shots on goal.  Their offensive unit is starting to come around, and the athleticism and speed of Jasper should provide a good matchup before district play starts next Tuesday.  The 'Jacks will host Nacogdoches starting at 6 p.m.

Girls soccer was originally scheduled to play Silsbee tonight, but after the two teams met her a few weeks ago, they won't be doing the same again tonight.  Like the boys, the Lady 'Jacks start district play on Tuesday night against Nac, but they will be on the road when they face the Lady Dragons.  Ruthie Lopez has scored six goals in the past two games, and Diboll is 2-0 in those two games.  Nac will be a tough test, but the Lady 'Jacks are hot right now.  If they can establish some momentum early, they are capable of pulling the early season upset on the district-favorites.

Softball is scheduled to play a scrimmage against Corrigan-Camden today at the high school starting at 4:30.  After yesterday's rain, it is likely to be a muddy afair, but the lack of precipitation and the occassional sun bursts should allow the two teams to still play.  The first hour or so of the scrimmage will showcase the junior varsity girls with the varsity squads taking over at about 6 p.m.
