National Signing Day update
Submitted by dibollfreepress on Wed, 02/03/2010 - 21:22To the average citizen, February 3 is just another average Wednesday. But to college football fans, February 3 marks the highly-anticipated National Signing Day that offers them insight into the future of their favorite teams. In fact, there are entire web sites devoted to year-round coverage and analysis of high school junior's and senior's just for this day. Three current Lumberjacks and at least one former 'Jack will sign their letters of intent to continue their football careers in college.
Antonio Johnson will sign with the University of North Texas. He had orginally committed to the Univeristy of Louisiana-Monroe, but a coaching change there has Johnson headed North to Denton. Most likely, Antonio will be a member of the offensive line with the Mean Green, but he also has experience as a tight end. North Texas is coached by Todd Dodge, who masterminded a spread offensive while coach at Southlake Carroll that resulted in five consecutive Texas state titles. Dodge's transition to the college game hasn't been as successful, but he's hoping the addition of Johnson will improve the team's 2-10 record from a season ago.
After flirting with some Ivy League schools, fellow offensive lineman Justin Havard will stay local and sign with Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. The Bearkats finished the 2009 season with a 5-6 record. Havard will be playing for the newly-hired Willie Fritz, and he will line up in practice every day against a familiar district opponent in Rusk defensive end John Trotter, who also signed with SHSU today.
The third Lumberjack to sign with a college is Christopher Dejesus. He will continue his playing career at Hardin-Simmons University. The Cowboys play as a division II school in Abilene. They produced a 6-4 record last season.
Ketauras Stanton will sign with the University of Memphis today as a junior college transfer. He choose the Tigers over Tennessee, TCU, and Louisiana Tech, where he originally committed. It was thought that Derek Dooley would bring Stanton with him to the SEC, but the lure of playing under former LSU running-backs coach Larry Porter was too big an opportunity to pass up. Twice, in 2007 and 2009, Porter was named National Recruiter of the Year, and he helped LSU's running attack to some of the most prosperous seasons in school history. Two of his players, Jacob Hester and Joseph Adai, were selected in the NFL draft. Stanton hopes Coach Porter can do the same for him, so he can join his big brother Jermichael Finley at football's highest level.
The three current Lumberjacks will sign their letters of intent tonight at the Lumberjack Stadium field house meeting room at 5:30 p.m. A meet-and-greet is scheduled to take place before that.
